Windows Vista on Apple MacBook Pro

Last night a Designer friend of mine who primarily uses Macbook pro contacted me to help him fix a stylesheet for a design he is working on to work perfectly fine on IE6 and IE7. He had not secondary machine or desktop to render the same design and so he was facing difficulty.

For designers especially, It is useful to install microsoft’s operating system on the MacBook Pro. If you have latest Macbook Pro, Apple is now using Intel chips which should make it even more easier to install the same.

Latest Macbook pro is coming with Apple’s Boot Camp utility preinstalled. The process starts by using Boot Camp on OS X to specify a partition size for Windows. It’s then simply a case of restarting the MacBook Pro with an XP or Vista installation disc in the drive and following the usual Windows installation process. The total time taken is less than an hour.

Once this is done you would need to run Mac installation disc to load drivers like Wi-Fi, audio and trackpad etc. MacBook Pro runs just like any other  Windows notebook infact better. You can any time switch simple reboot and choose OS X.

Only known Disadvantages of doing this
One, the ability to switch from the 9600M GT to the less power-hungry 9400M in vista pre-installed machines is not available in this case, which you can easily deal with.

However, doing this will require you to purchase a separate Windows license. Which will make insane price as macbook pro is already too expensive.

But if you can not give up your love for macbook, and still have to check things and do web performance checks on vista equally as much as on macbook, then you must get the Windows-based software package on your MacBook Pro. See it as an extra price for extraordinary ability.

Older Macbook pro
If you are having an older version of Macbook Pro, then process is slightly complicated but doable. While MacBook Pro’s are x64 capable, the process for setting it up is not as simple as running an installer with the newer macbook pros.

First step in this case is to create partition on your macbook pro for the same, try to allocate bigger partition as vista is a big install!

You can use a DVD/ISO which can be created after downloading from MSDN with Vista x64, choose the appropriate version for Vista installation.

You can upgrade bootcamp drivers with your existing macbook pro drivers, download available here
Either ways you can download these drivers from else where on the file sharing websites, After you have downloaded the drivers put them on a USB drive or burn them to a CD and install them on your Macbook Pro.

Follow the same steps after this installation.
