Mozilla has just released an update of its very potential firefox-addon called Ubiquity. I have praised Ubiquity in many of my earlier posts and it is the first add-on I recommend to anyone who uses Firefox. I am taking the risk of being tagged as Ubiquity freak because I have endorsed it like hell in spite of the fact that I have never been paid a single penny by Ubiquity folks. The Ubiquity 0.1.3 comes with many improvements which makes it lot more tempting.

Ubiquity

The most notable improvement in the latest version of Ubiquity however is that it supports skinning which means you can now get rid of the ugly skin. The “skin-list” command will now take you to your Ubiquity skin page where you can change the default skin. The code-friendly folks can also create a custom skin of their own.

The other improvements I have been able to find in my last one hour of tweaking Ubiquity is that “right-clicking” on text now finally gives me option to give certain Ubiquity commands like Convert, Translate, e-mail, Twitter and Search etc. Strangely enough I don’t get an option to “define” the word which would have gotten me rid of a dictionary add-on.

There are obviously many defects and they will continue to be addressed in updated versions but I strongly believe that Mozilla should now start a repository for Ubiquity commands where the “safe” commands can be showcased to download. Whenever you try to install an external Ubiquity command you bump into Firefox Red Screen of Death which actually does scare many.

Now that Ubiquity supports skinning so there would be even stronger need to have a repository where both Ubiquity commands and the skins can be made available to download.

Now I am only being critic of this great Firefox add-on because I like it. I would love Ubiquity to grow because it holds great promise.

Okay, enough of this. You might wanna try out new skins for Ubiquity which are available to download.
