1-bit data converting to 8-bit when flattening
We are experiencing a problem that involves printing from Illustrator CS. We often place or embed 1-bit tiffs (monochrome) at various resolutions as high as 2400ppi. These bitmaps are often used for drop-shadows, text and screens. Our rips "see" these 1-bit files as "line-work" and leave then at there original resolution. The problem is that if Illustrator flattens any of these tiffs they are changed into 8-bit files and our rips "see" them as a "CT" that is then resampled down to "CT" resolution of 300ppi. This will destroy any screen or dither, and leave text to soft. In-order to use transparency on any job that has 1-bit tiffs placed, Illustrator must keep the 1-bit files 1-bit after flattening the file.

Re: 1-bit data converting to 8-bit when flattening
Mike,
This is an issue with CCI systems as well. Unfortunately, I'm unaware of anything that can fix this issue. Are you sending EPS files to the RIP directly from AI?
