Default 10.2.1->10.2.6 update - can no longer restart MDD G4

Never mind the kernel, I'm the one panicking.

    A brand-new, just out-of-the box dual 1.25 GHz with 10.2.1 installed.
It came with 1 gig of RAM; I put in another gig to fill it up. It
seemed to be working fine for 10-15 minutes before I went to software
update to bring it up to 10.2.6. (There were also some other updates
involved, a Stuffit security update, and some Apple stuff, I don't
    recall exactly.)

First problem, software update quit in the middle of the process; I
don't know where it was as I wasn't sitting on it, watching. I tried to
launch software update again, and it quit.

I went to the OS X web site to download the 10.2.6 combo updater, via
Explorer. Got it to the desktop OK, opened it up, launched it. A few
moments into the process I got the kernel panic multi-lingual "You need
to restart your computer" message. I did so, and about a second after
the gray screen with the white apple appeared, got the same panic
message. I tried zapping PRAM, I tried holding the shift key, I tried
everything I could find from this group and the OS X knowledge base.
Nothing will get this machine to start. (Oh, I took out the RAM I'd
installed, in case it had gone bad - no difference. No other software
was installed yet, the machine was that new.)

I'd be happy to reinstall whatever, except that there's no way I can
see to get the bleeping CD tray to open, so I can boot up from some
    other disc.

    Help?

Hold down Command-Option-O-F to drop into open firmware. Type "eject
cd" at the prompt. Now reboot again with an install CD.

If that doesn't work, hold down the CD manual eject when you turn on
the machine. IIRC you have to take the bezel off for that.

Best guess is your new memory was bad and the Software Update process
with the bad memory corrupted your system.
