10 and 11(cs) .ai files won't open in Reader 6 (Error 140)

We create art in Illustrator 10 and 11 as .ai files. Other people outside of our Art Department can view them in Reader, since those .ai files are PDF. This week, though, a few of those .ai files (no different from the rest, that we can see) generate an error when opened in Reader 6 (Windows and Mac versions of Reader 6):

"There was an error opening this document. There was a problem reading this document (140)."

Here's an AI 10 .ai file that opens fine in Illustrator 10 or 11, but errors in Reader 6:

Any help? Only a few files generate this error, including some that don't even have fonts embedded in them (the most likely culprit). It's new, and NO, we haven't installed anything new. It just started happening for no reason.

Looks to me like it's just a bad file. I get the following postscript error:

%%[Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: obj]%%

I'm not a Postscript expert so I can't tell you where the problem lies, but if I open up your file and resave it out as an ai file, it opens up fine in Acrobat 6 for me.

Right. They are BAD FILES. I got that. Why? And why *ONLY* when viewed in Reader 6 (they open fine in Reader 5)? And why no error opening in Illustrator? Why is the error only noticed in Reader 6, and why only a few files out of every 100, and why only within the past few days? Has anyone seen this error before? Thanks.
