Default 100% black converts to 4 color when distilled

When I export a document from Quark as a .ps file and then distill it into a PDF my black type (and other blacks) convert and print as 4 color blacks. Is there anything I can do to ensure my blacks stay 100% black?! It is a particular problem when printing digitally. Thanks.

I'm using a customized "Press Quality" setting in distiller with the color management set to "Leave color unchanged". Color output in Quark is set Composite CMYK.

    Digital printing through a RIP.

OK - have you checked your PDF through the OUTPUT PREVIEW?

The RIP might be incorrectly configured?

Go ADVANCED / PRINT PRODUCTION / OUTPUT PREVIEW /
You can now SHOW certain colours such as RGB, DeviceCMYK etc

Are you sure your text is set to only 100% black in the Quark document? I have run into many instances where someone has set the type to Registration, or a rich black.

Or is the Quark document set for an RGB output (such as a web page)? Double check the output settings for that file.

The most I have heard from text being 4-color black is usually when it comes from a MS Office document, because all colors from those files are RGB.
