Default 1251 Client does not support authentication

Not sure why this error is coming up when I try to connect to a MYSQL database.
I am running Apache2, PHP4, MYSQL4.1 on windows xp home. I am running
Dreamweaver MX 2004. I get the following error: 1251 Client does not support
authentication protocol requested by the server;consider upgrading MYSQL client
    Any suggestions? Thanks
