2003 WINS registration expiring
Hi all,
We have a problem with the WINS registration of our 2003
server.
The server registers itself on our NT4.0 WINS server, but
never renews the registration. When the registration
expires no one is able to communicate with the 2003 server.
Has anyone else had a similar problem or have any ideas as
to what me be causing this ?
Cheers
Kris

2003 WINS registration expiring
Back at ya! The simple fix is to add a static entry for
your 2003 server into your WINS server database. This
will solve it! Next, I suspect that you have not defined
a WINS service address on your 2003 server,
under, "Network Connections"\"Local Area Connection
Properties"\"Internet Protocol Settings"\"Advanced TCP/IP
Settings"\"WINS - tab". The default behavior is
registration via broadcast. I'm sure that over extended
periods of time your 2003 server isn't broadcasting
NetBIOS. I bet over time, the registrations in WINS
expiries. If this is not the case? Implement the static
WINS entry.

2003 WINS registration expiring
Cheers for that
We have set a static address for the server in order to
work round the problem.
The IP settings for the WINS Tab were set to Enable
The correct address of our WINS server
NetBIOS over TCP / IP was enabled
And a LMHOSTS lookup was also enabled, yet the entry still
seemed to expire
Other then putting in a static entry, do you have any
other suggestions
Thanks in advance
Cheers

2003 WINS registration expiring
Personally, I would leave the static as the fix-all.
Hunting down issues with WINS can be time consuming,
besides, this is the normal practice.
Have a great day!
