2004 UI - What's with the borders ??
There is a Command I wrote which sets my Canvas to its maximum
dimensions without hindersome scrollbars. In Fireworks MX this was set
to 1060 x 920 pixels. I work at 1600 x 1200 res. Now with the new
Fireworks MX 2004 I tried the same Command to maximise the Canvas. I
need to set the parameters (dimensions) at 1048 x 877 pixels for the
Command to not have Fireworks MX 2004 show scrollbars.
Wow! This actually means that the new version of Fireworks uses "more UI
space" than the previous version. I lost 12 x 43 ( ! ) pixels. Now,
with my screensize that isn't such a problem really, but I can imagine
people who work on smaller monitors find this not really an improvement
over the previous version or versions.
So, topic of this post/rant: What's with the borders?
When I look at the Macromedia website I see the same borders in their
current design. Nice those resemblances, but for diehard Fireworks users
not really functional for their favourite app.
Just my 2 Eurocents...

Re: 2004 UI - What's with the borders ??
Yeah... I mentioned this UI change before.
Basically they took out the reference to the SmallFonts Font for all UI elements and are now using the default Shell Font in Windows XP. Someone at Macromedia wrote back to me about it and stated that you can change the font size though the Display Settings | Appearance | Advanced tab, but that is NOT correct. You can not change the default shell font in any version of Windows without a registry hack.
This new Gigantic properties inspector, color swatches, and status bar font size is really annoying because it wastes so much screen space. The SmallFonts Font was a perfect font for UI elements. That is one of the reasons why I switched back to MX rather than using MX 2004.

I don't think you know what I'm talking about. Default Shell Fonts are not changeable as they will cause draw errors and misaligned elements in the UI. It is possible to change the font by editing the registry but then most all UI dialogs that use that font will render in a way that it is not readable or not visible at all.
If you could post a screen shot of FW2004 using the SmallFonts Font in it's dialogs and Properties Inspectors, I'd really like to see.
If you truly can change the font, please let me know which Object's Font you change in the Display Settings to affect the PI in FW. I have EVERY font in my display settings set to Tahoma 7pt but FW2004 ALWAYS uses the default Shell font of Tahoma 8pt.

I switched my display to classic and changed all of my fonts to Tahoma 7pt and the PI in FW2004 still remains the same (Tahoma 8pt). It also displays the exact same way in Windows 2000 Pro. In checking the regsitry for the default Shell font in both XP and 2000, they are both set to Tahoma 8.

You don't get them "through email" but use a newsreader. Linda gave you the
address. If you are on Win you can just use the freebie Outlook Express.
If you are on Mac . . . I have no idea.

Netscape/Mozilla. Or a real newsreader, such as MT NewsWatcher.

Re: 2004 UI - What's with the borders ??
Read all your posts here qrayg.
I agree with you that some fonts may be too small to read. But if you
look at it in 1600x1200 then you can appreciate the larger fonts. They
can be set, but I prefer not to as indeed this messes up everything.
Dreamweaver 2004 has some bad PI things too. When you enter 100% in the
value for Width for example; it displays 00% with the 1 rendered
invisible intil you click out of the value and then in again.
What I really appreciate in the new FW2004 are the bigger sliders that
control the Color (See Linda, i'm using American spelling from now on
;-) ) Effects. Those were a pain in the @$$ in previous versions.

Re: 2004 UI - What's with the borders ??
I understand how to use a news reader. I just didn't know what the server
name was.
The problem is, I'm required to use Outlook for Windows XP at work and I
have G5 (without Classic installed - so I can't use OE for Mac) at home. I
tried some free news reader programs for OSX but I could not subscribe to
this forum.
I guess I'll have to use OE at work and hope no-one notices.
Thanks for understanding... oh wait.

Craig,
Download Mozilla Thunderbird for OS X. It's what I use on my Mac and it
really is a pretty good program. It sort of has the look of OE without
the MS tentacles. ;-) There's a version for Windows as well, which is
what I'm using at the moment.

Craig:
Yes it is but I have an AMD with poor performing RAM (or so it seems)
which might cause some troubles.
By the way, the other Craig is also active in this thread. I have
E-mailed him about 10 times now, but either his mailaddress is
non-functional, he is a very busy person, my mails aren't reaching him
OR he doesn't like me very much and just plain and simple ignores me (as
unfortunately happens from time to time)....
My E-mail for Craig from Solardreamstudio's did indeed arrive at the
wrong address, but now that I have sent it right, I still get no
response.... Well, can't have everything in life now can you? ;-)

It's best to keep private email discussions out of the groups, in general.
Unless you have a pretty close relationship with Craig, I don't think it's a
good idea to mention in a public forum whether he answers email or not.
That's his private business. Not mine. Not ours. Thanks.
