3000 Subsets

I have a user with Acrobat Pro 7.0.7 generating a PDF from Word 2004 doc of 360 pages using approx. 6 fonts plus equations from MathType. The resulting PDF is subsetting fonts repeatedly to the tune of nearly 3000 subsets. Extract from the user:

"Here's the kicker: my Adobe Distiller settings say to embed fully embed
all fonts, not subsets. Still, I end up with a vast list of subsets (it
takes Acrobat several minutes just to catalogue all the subsets for
viewing in the Document Properties window).

Finally, some of the fonts, like Symbol, are listed in Acrobat's Doc
Properties window as TrueType , Ansi for some embeddings, and Truetype
(CID) Identity-H for other embeddings."

Section Breaks & the other causes of problems have been systematically removed/tested for, but I've never seen anything like this before - especialy since Acrobat is set to fully embed fonts rather than creating subsets in the first place.

What would cause this & how can it be corrected?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated & I'll be happy to provide additional info if I can.

I've noticed that recent doucuments from excel and from Quicken for me will subset up to 10-20 copies of such fonts a helvetica , Geneva, times.

This is only affecting my PowerBook 17" with 2 GB RAM using X.4.8 and acrobat 7.0.8 and whatever version of Acrobat is used in The Mac OSX system.

my Desktop unit using X.3.9 does multiple subsets (of same fonts), but no more than 2 or 3 at the most of each font. I attribute that for taking into account fonts used in each page. The documents for me tend to be Documents that other Pdf's have been merged into to make a Larger document. For example I have my Treasury Report for checking and Mutal fund in Quicken. Then I have a Budget created in Excel, along with a TRansactions report for the mutal fund, then a networth, all created in Excel. Then I open the pdf for the checking and I add pages until I get everything into one report. Then to reduce the size I choose Optimizer and fonts and any fonts there is one copy of I leave. If there are multiple copies of Fonts I remove all except for one and optimize. The last few times on OSX.4.8 there are for me as many as 20 copies of certain fonts. While other only one copy is there to begin with.

Also the fact that its making subsets when I've told it not use subsets has me wondering as well.
