    Default 4J's

    Hi all

Has anyone used 4J's and converted their 4gl code across ?

    Was the conversion painless ?

Was the final outcome worth it ?

    thanks in advance.

Yes. We first moved from I4GL to BDL a few years ago, then to Genero this
    past year.

Relatively, yes. We ran into a couple of minor SQL issues when we had to
run against an Oracle database, but we didn't have to make too many code
changes. We had a financial application that ran at 800+ customer sites,
and we kept everything fairly simple to accommodate a wide range of
environments. Our customers ran everything from SE to IDS 9. (Oh, plus two
Oracle sites and a few SQL Server sites. That is what 4Js gave us: the
ability to run against those other databases, plus a graphical front end.)
We didn't take advantage of anything that wasn't available in SE. If you do
use some of the more sophisticated engine features, you may have a few more
things to deal with. I can't speak to that.

Absolutely! I loved the fact that I could continue to work in a language
that I was very comfortable with, and it allowed the company to expand our
market to sites that insisted on using those other databases. Plus, the
front end gave us the look and some of the features of a true graphical
application without having to rewrite the business logic.

I concur with June. Quite painless, very useful and even "fun".

The new Genero is even more modern in the interface, but will require a bit
more tailoring to exploit the new functionality.

Far Far far cheaper than a complete redevelopment in Java or something
equally bad as a Business programming language....
