5 times larger .PDF from .DOC ??? Anyone have any ideas?
OK, I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.8 on an Intel based chip. I have Microsoft Word X SR 1 with the latest product updates and Acrobat 8 Professional.
I'm trying to take an all-text 4 page document (44kb) and turn it into a .PDF only when I do so I get a 204kb .PDF?!?!?!
I've tried printing to the Acrobat Distiller as well as using the installed button on my Word toolbar but get the exact same numbers.
....Just bought Acrobat 8 and the tech. support had nothing for me aside to say that on his 10.4.8 NON-Intel chip he was having no problems ... recommended me to this forum.
The document was originally a PC document ... could that have anything to do with it? Do I need to get the Office X 2004 update? ... would like to avoid the extra $$.

Re: 5 times larger .PDF from .DOC ??? Anyone have any ideas?
The the following, after creating the PDF run the PDF Optimizer if not already set up on the menubars look in the tools menu.
when pdf is open. A lot of times I've found that there are multiple copies of certain files maybe there are 10-20 copies of the same font family/style listed. say 10-20 copies or more of Arial Bold.
There should be one copy and only one copy of a given font and font style listed. example
Arial
Arial Bold (20 copies)
Arial Bold Italic (10 Copies)
Geneva
Times
If you will un-embed 19 copies of the of the Arial Bold
and 9 copies of the Arial Italic. That will dramatically reduce the size of the pdf File.
If the file has a whole lot of Graphics there is nothing much that can be done.

That seems to be the case on further digging. How the HELL did you know that?
I went into Distiller's Font Settings and it had:
users/fonts
system/fonts
macOS/documents/fonts
and finally, acrobat/fonts
jeezum! I took it back to just the system fonts and it now takes a 1.5 MB document down to 20kb. ...only time will tell if I removed the right font log.
thanks man!

Re: 5 times larger .PDF from .DOC ??? Anyone have any ideas?
Experience.
Just leave one copy of each variation (Italic, bold, Plain, etc.) and one copy of each different font. Arial, Helvetica, Times, Courier. In most cases for some reason Acrobat can't understand their is only be on copy of each font used. (Difference in style is included as a different font) I never have understood if it sees 20 different variation on the exact font why don't it just pick one instead of putting in all 20 to be safe.
