5803 will run one year or 6 months ?

Ask a Question related to Windows Vista, Design and Development.

  1. #1

Default 5803 will run one year or 6 months ?

    Hi all Vista-Folks ,

    I am running Windows 6.0 Build 5308.winmain_idx01.060223-2145
( official, activated and genuine and legal ? YES ! )

The Eula as also stated in MS Connect Legal Threads says :

" The software will stop running on 30/09/2006 "

but now my winver.exe quotes me :

"Evaluation Copy.expires 0.8.03.2007" .. that would be exactly one year
    from now on.

    So what is right ?

Usually Microsofts OS-Evaluation and Betas did run in the Past exactly 180
Days and Eula and Winver Date matched the same date. So now I am a bit
    confused.

Someone knows or is it lottery-play ?

I know for sure not to do important things with a BEta-Product, but I would
like to know exactly when the last good moment will be to back up all my
stuff - I do use various OS, including Linux on one Computer, some for joy
or testing. Some for work, so it comes to times when I have files that are
acessed in my other OS too and I really cannot keep all the time an eye
where I have what stored - and Vista will not even let you log in when the
    time is up,so..

From MS Officials or Beta NGs nobody seems to know.
One Guy mentioned it could be just a mistake-driven date given to set when
    the Build was compiled.
    Hm ?

    Regards

    Sascha

The EULA is what we agree to.
In any event, the next build, probably three or four more will be out making
this build completely obsolete by September of this year..

Hmm... I installed Vista 5308 on the day of getting it, and mine says
"Expires on 3rd July 2007"... when in previous builds, it only stuck for a
few months. Obviously a bug, but it's not really that major is it? It's not
going to be in the final build, so I'm not too fussed with it! I'll try and
get a screenshot in a bit.

128MB Video card on that machine, only 256MB RAM (I have another 256MB RAM
in another slot, but I think my motherboard is kinda broken...).

Glass should run with 128MB RAM, I think it's only the video card that's
important. I've got an AMD Dual Core in the next room which seems to perform
just the same in terms of RAM, but could well be because of the performance
    issues etc.

    Zack;
    Is that an exact quote?
Or does it actually say "07/03/2007"
That could also be read as 7 March 2007.
If so could that be exactly a year after you installed?

    Zack,

Where did you find the About window you are showing? Maybe I have missed
something, but I cannot find that view.

Also is there a way to tell if Aero Glass is turned on or not?

    Thanks,
    Norm

If your window borders have transparency, Aero Glass is on. If your windows
are not transparent and look almost like XP Media Center Edition only grey
or if you're running the classic view, Aero Glass is off.

Oooooh that makes loads more sense - in the UK, it's the other way round -
dd/mm/yyyy - in America they go for mm/dd/yyyy so yeh, that makes more sense
if it was 1 year on hehe. Silly me :op

Does Aero turn on automatically or do you have to turn it on?

Will it run on a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX?

I am apparently seeing the classic version.

    Does it matter ?

We will all be running later builds before either of those 2 dates, anyway.

Default Re: 5803 will run one year or 6 months ?

    Zack;
US uses the date both ways depending on the organization.
Military and some businesses use 11 March 2006 while it seems most use March
    11 2006.
Canada seems to use both as well depending on who you are dealing with.
As shown in winver, it can be confusing at times since it is not
    standardized.

Default Re: 5803 will run one year or 6 months ?

No, Aero Glass won't work on that card. It will be disabled and you won't
be able to get it unless... You might be able to hack the registry and get
it to work, but even if you're lucky enough to get it to work, it will be
VERY slow on that card. If you're sticking with NVIDIA, you'll need at
minimum a GeForce FX5200 card with 128MB of video RAM for Aero Glass. I'd
go with the FX5500 256MB or higher though if I were you. The classic
version resembles Windows 2000 or Windows 98. Is that what you see? Or do
you see the version that looks like kind of like Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2005? If it looks like Windows XP MCE, you're running Aero, but not
Aero Glass. Don't feel bad, I'm in the same boat. Although I haven't
installed Vista yet, I know that I won't be seeing Aero Glass unless I get a
new video card. I've currently got an NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti200 with 128MB of
DDR VRAM. (It's better than your card, but it's not enough.) I'm thinking
about getting a GeForce FX5500. You can get one on newegg.com for $60
including shipping. I've heard that you'll need an AGP 8x video card to run
Aero Glass, but from what I've heard, AGP 4x will work well also. I hope
this is true because my motherboard only supports up to 4x. A GeForce6200
or higher would be really good if you run your monitor at a high resolution
(1600x1200 or higher) as long as you don't get a vanilla card (the base).

These will be the specs of my future Vista machine...
NVIDIA GeForce3 TI200 128MB DDR (Probably will be upgraded to NVIDIA GeForce
FX5500 256MB DDR before Vista public beta comes out.)
768MB of DDR RAM (Probably will be upgraded to 1.75GB in a few months.)
    Lite On 16x DVD drive
Memorex (Lite On) 52x32x52 CD-RW drive
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ overclocked to 2.14GHz
    400w PSU
    Asus A7V333 motherboard Revision 1.xx
Creative Audigy Soundcard (I hope this will work in Vista.)
    Linksys 10/100 network card
    Floppy drive
WD 80GB 7200RPM 2MB Cache IDE hard drive
WD 120GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache IDE hard drive (Secondary)
    19" CRT Monitor
    Logitech Z-680 speakers
    Logitech Elite Keyboard
    Logitech MX510 Mouse
    Canon i560 printer
    Rio S35S MP3 Player
    Canon PowerShot A520 camera
    Logitech Wingman controller
Visioneer 5800 scanner (I have my bets this won't work knowing Visioneer's
compatibility with new OS's in the past.)

    Hi,
let me explain my experience with Aero Glass and Geforce 5200/6200 Cards:

Aero Glass does not need an AGP 8x Mainboard. It runs on mine (see below)
    pretty fine with AGP4x.

All you need is a modern Hardware-DirectX9 Card with 64 MB RAM from nvidia
or Ati to be on the safe side.
The cheapest method is a GeForce FX 5200. Its the lowest and oldest DirectX9
Card available which goes here in Germany for about 30 - 35 ?.
The 5200 is nothing special but has a Hardware inbuilt DX9 Support and thats
all one needs for smoothly running Glass enabled in VIsta.

My Mainboard is pretty old : ECS K7S5A with AMD Duron 1800 MhZ, 512 MB
SD-RAM ( it can handle SD and DDR) and it has (only) AGP 4x. ( You notice
that it is in Todays specs A "Low End PC" ? - Vista runs ok and fine with
all stuff enabled !- the slowness is because it is full of Debug-Code, its
not faster on Monster-GhZ-Machines - believe it )

I expect a RTM-Vista that will run fine on most every half-way-modern PC
that just has enough RAM and a DX9 Card in.I have no Panic that the RTM
Product will be that different when it comes to Hardware- Support than this
    Beta-Build.

Like I said I had that card ( 5200 128 ) and it worked ok in Vista 5231 and
    5270, now I upgraded to 5308 and a Geforce 6200 ( 80? ) which has a better
PixelShader Support and some extra-capabilities( but generally its the same
GPU ) that I need not only for Vista but for some Graphics Programs I use on
    other OS.

Aero Glass does not to run "faster" or "smoother" than it did before. Its
the same effects with 5200 and 6200 ( and I will bet with a 7000 series card
it will also show no difference ).

The 5200 and all other modern Geforce have AGP 8x support by default but run
also fine on AGP 4x MBs.They just switch to AGP 8 when put in a capable MB
that has the BIOS set properly to support the feature.

Also nvidia based Cards have a much better 3D support in Linux, which I also
run on this machine like I mentioned in the Thread before. The Drivers from
Ati are a real pain when it comes to Linux.

On Windows OS it should be equal which brand you choose, but nvidia has a
good Beta-Developer group and they manage such things as Vista-Beta-Drivers
and keep them up-to-date while Ati does not put so much effort in those
    projects.

Default Re: 5803 will run one year or 6 months ?

    Travis, Andre,

Thanks for the information. I will probably update the video board, provided
I can get one that will work with the Dell Dimension 8200, if not I will
probably look at updating the computer. I use this one for developing and
currently have eight operating systems installed and hate to think I would
have to do that all over again. :-)

    Thanks again,
    Norm

But if you have the drivers there, Aero Glass does turn on automatically -
worked on all of mine, so I've got no reason to believe otherwise. Just
depends on whether you have the drivers there or not.

It really is confusing... I'm British, run off British currency and the
British (or rather Greenwich) Time Standard... so I'm used to dd/mm/yyyy...
same on my Pocket PC phone - it comes up as month first, then date. Quite
confusing, and a lot of the time I have to look for the "greater number" to
determine whether it's the month or not.

In theory yeh, but if you've got Vista which is able to be run for a year,
technically it means that pirate copied holders can use it for far longer.
That's my basis of opinion anyway.

    Zack;
The thieves will be able to run it far beyond that month and year.
It is the casual pirates that will be stopped at that time.
