Default 7.0 "stops responding" while loading Plug-Ins

Hi! I can't even say how long I've been using Adobe products, but I finally ran into a problem I have no idea how it got started or how I should fix it.

Last night, after finishing some last minute touches on a project I'm working on, I saved my files, quit Photoshop, shut down my computer and went to bed. This afternoon, I went to open up Photoshop, but every time it begins to load the plug-ins, the program stops responding. After retrying what seems like fifty times, I can tell you that it's not a specific plug-in that's causing the problem, as Photoshop will stop responding on any given plug-in.

After fooling around with my problem, I found I can successfully start Photoshop if I remove the entire plug-in folder from the adobe directory completely. This does not sit well with me because I rely on the plug-ins pretty heavily.

Any ideas on how or if I can fix my problem? I haven't installed anything new or changed any of my computer's preferences...so, I have no idea why the program would just stop working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

see if reinstalling photoshop will help. I think this could repair the problem and the plug-ins should be still there.

Michael,

Thanks for the help, unfortunately, this did not solve the problem.

After I reinstalled photoshop, it was very sluggish when loading the plug-ins (taking almost 2 minutes!!) and finally stopped responding during the initiating stage.

Only other solution I could possibly think of is reformatting the hard drive- which will be a last resort (and would hopefully work), but I can't imagine not being able to work with photoshop (Imageready, btw, loads up with no problems, whatsoever).

Again, thanks for the suggestion.

Kris,

Have you loaded any new plugins lately? Sometimes, if the plugin is not totally compliant, Photoshop will choke on it.

If you have KPT 3 plugins, make sure you update to 7.01 (Adobe patched it so KPT 3 would work). You can get it at:
www.adobe.com

If that is not your problem, and if you have already tried reinstalling Photoshop and recreating the preferences file, there is one tedious way of finding the problem. That is to move all your plugins to a temporary directory, and then load them one (at most a few at a time)into your plugins directory. You will have to restart Photoshop each time but that is one tried and true way of identifying a bad or non-compliant plugin.

Jake,

Thanks for responding! So far, I've moved all of my plug ins into a new directory, moved them 1 by 1 back into the plug-ins folder while starting/exiting adobe each time and that seems to of worked (though I am afraid to turn off my computer- just in case)!

Thanks again,

I'm a PS newbie and only have v. 6 installed here, but this seems like
a general software problem...

You've done the most important bit by identifying the Plug-Ins folder
as the culprit.

Rename the Plug-Ins folder (e.g. Plug-Ins.Old) and create another
empty folder called Plug-Ins.

Next, start copying plug-ins from the .Old folder into the Plug-Ins
folder and restarting PS until it croaks... The last one you copied
would be the offending plug-in.

To speed things up (if you have many plug-ins) you can do a "binary
search" but copying bunches of plug-ins. For example, the top half and
identifying where the offending one is. Then divide the remainder in
half and so on until you narrow it down to one.

From your description it looks like a plug-in was corrupted somehow so
you may have to reinstall it. It may also be that the naughty plug-in
doesn't play nice with others which is more difficult to track down
and you'll have to re-install more than one.

On the other hand, it may be something completely different... ;-)

Good luck!

Don.
