    Default 7500/OS 8.6 boot problems

My friend has a 7500/120 MHZ chip, OS 8.6, desktop.

Recently when he turned on power, after several days of non-use, he
started hetting a bad disk icon at boot, i.e. the floppy icon with the
"X" through it. The system is plugged in but power may be cut
sometimes I have found (power stip gets turned off).

He was able to boot from an OS 8.5 CD. When he boots from the OS 8.5
CD the hard drive cannot be seen on the internal bus, i.e. the icon
does not show on the desktop.

I opened the system and tried switchng the disk on the databus cable
and that seemed to fix the problem but a couple of days later it was
    the same thing.

It has been to a qualified Mac service tech (local Micro Center store)
twice now and they cannot determine what is wrong with it. Each time
he sent it, it spun up fine for them. Its running Ok now but he is
about to take on a job that will require reliability of the system and
cannot afford it dropping dead again.

I thought it might be the logic board battery but the date and time is
holding up fine. Also the tech didn't seem to think this was a
    problem.

I'm wondering of the hard drive is going bad and the days of unuse
simply get it bogged down. The handling by a tech might be enough to
jostle it to get it to spin up? I had that happen to me a few years
ago with a HD in a Performa - tapping it made it spin up - but so far
the tech has not located a bad solder joint, cable, chip, or what ever
    else.

Any suggestions? We're looking ahead at what to check next if it
stops again with the dead disk icon.

Your friend should buy a new cable (motherboard - harddrive)
I had once the same problem.

This could be a problem called stiction, a condition where the lubricants
in the drive bearings get sticky so that the drive may not always spin up
in time to be recognized. It's not a bad solder joint or a connection.

Solution is to replace the drive, or get an external drive as insurance
and put the OS on the external along with something like Lido to mount the
drive should it spin up late. Eventually these drives become less reliable
until finally you lose all your data. That doesn't sound like what you
    want to happen.

Yup, I had that problem with a Windoz machine I used infrequently with
an old drive. If I booted daily, no problemo. Boot once a week and I had
to reset once or twice before it flew. I finally trashed the drive as I
didn't want to go through that.
