$_SERVER problem - PHP Development

when I set $_SERVER ['PHP_AUTH_USER'] = $User; in the main page, in the next page says: Notice: Undefined index: PHP_AUTH_USER with this echo $_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_USER']; I'm using apache + php4 something wrong?? thanks!...

    Default $_SERVER problem

    when I set
    $_SERVER ['PHP_AUTH_USER'] = $User;
    in the main page,

    in the next page says:
    Notice: Undefined index: PHP_AUTH_USER
    with this
    echo $_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_USER'];

    I'm using apache + php4

    something wrong??

    Yes. You can't write anything to $_SERVER and expect it appear on the next
    page. You use $_SESSION and $_COOKIE for that. $_SERVER is generated by php
    engine each time a page is loaded, it's not something you store data in,
    only the php does.
