I have it on good authority from Nikon that from now on, all new
Nikkors will be G lenses, except possibly for specialist lenses.

At 7500 EUR MSRP Canon has nothing to fear I think ...

Couldn't suppress a chuckle when I read the words ...

"This new lens combines many interesting features ... it has vibration
reduction (essential and expected for modern long telephoot lenses)"

    .... since none of Nikon's long fast tele's (300 f/2.8, 400 f/2.8, 500 f/4 and
600 f/4) have VR, while ALL the Canon counterparts are IS lenses. "Essential"
    and "expected" indeed.

Still, the 200-400 VR will be a great addition to the Nikon line. A year ago
the rumor was Canon would offer a 200-400 IS with the DO technology ... maybe
this will spur them on. Competition is a good thing.

Well, they do not have a zoom like that.
The 100-400 is a fine lens, but it is dark.

I guess it will only be for press photographers then...

A Nikkor that has assumed almost legendary status is the 200-400 f4 MF lens.
Some great Art Wolfe shots come to mind where that lens was put to good use.
Even used, it goes for several thousand dollars. If this new one is as
good, then maybe it's not so outrageously priced.

Indeed, and I especially agree with your observation about the quote
from Nikons brochure: Such words might prove that someone is now
awaken at Nikon and made a good ysis as of why the former
undisputed 1st lady in photography lost so much grounds to Canon.
Canon was losing money in their late FD-mount period and the
transition to the EOS system with EF mount was very costly but
visionary. Time has proven them right!

In my eyes Nikon made now an entire series of clever steps,
including their wide angle coverage in DX lenses.

Yes, if Canon intends to stick with the 1.6 class multiplier like on the
10D/D60/D30 bodies then they really do need to catch up to Nikon with some
    wider lenses.

    :-)

We shall restrict level of darkness to lux and lumens only!
