a rookie needs help networking - Mac Applications & Software

I have a Mac OS 9.1 and a new Sony PC. The guy who sold me the PC also sold me a D-Link Router assuring me I could network the two computers. All I need to be able to do is use the same cable connection and have both computers access my printer. I do not know how to go about doing this as the instructions included are very vague. Can anyone out there give me VERY simple instructions. Bean...

Aren't there instructions with the router?
The Mac end of the cable connecting the cable modem and Mac should be
connected to the router instead. Additional cables of the same type are
needed to connect the systems to the router.

What kind of printer? Inkjet(USB, parallel?) Laser? Does it have a network
interface in it? There is if the printer has a jack which could accept the
cable currently going to the Mac from the modem.

If USB printer, I'd like to know if anyone has shared it between 10.2.x and
XP, with the printer connected to the XP system.
I know there is an adapter ($60?)with 2 ports, 1 USB, one network, which can
turn a USB printer into a network printer. I'd like to do it without extra
    hardware.
