    Ah, lovely machines.

It depends on what you have, and what you want to do.

    Give it power, and network.

    It's an NFS server.

If you can ask a question with more information, you'll get much better
    answers.

It's a BSD-based operating system, you set up the shares on the filer,
and mount them as any other NFS mounts on the Unix boxes. There's a
GUI / web interface which may be your best bet.

Nobody can answer questions with no information in them. I'm not trying
to be unhelpful. Think of it as a Unix server with NFS shares, it works
exactly the same way as any other NFS server - it's just very, very good
    at it.

NetApp advertises that they are NFS/CIFS toasters. If you know
how to set up any NFS or CIFS server then you automatically
know more than you need to set up a NetApp. That is their
claim. Having set up a couple and maintained some more, I'm
here to tell you that their claims are true. Until you start
upgrading the version of OnTap they are *trivial* to deal with.

If you get a new NetApp filer it will come with a small brochure that
steps you through setting it up. Follow the steps in the doc and it
    works. Seriously.

Read the docs that come with the box. The little brochure that
walks you through the set-up, it's seriously all you need to get it
    up and running.

OnTap is a real operating system with a CLI, a handfull of commands,
a GUI and so on. Most of the commands are inspired by their UNIX
versions but there are far fewer of them than on UNIX. Heck, many
of them are UNIX commands that were ported to Windows ages ago
so if you know Windows CLI you'll be fine. The key is the man pages
for *every* command all printed out and bound is a small book. Read
the whole thing end to end and it's still under half the size of UNIX
docs from the 1980s that every SA in existance was expected to have
    read.

We're not talking about a general purpose computer server here.
The things claim to be toasters and they are. The level of complexity
they have is tiny not just compared to hosts running UNIX or VMS
or Windows or whatever. They are simpler than any of the large
disk arrays out there. For that matter they are simpler than Cisco
routers and switches. OnTap is that small and simple.
