Acrobat 6.0/6.0.1 freezes on Windows 2000 Professional

    Default Acrobat 6.0/6.0.1 freezes on Windows 2000 Professional

    I am running Windows 2000 Professional and installed the trial version of Acrobat 6.0. After a few days, I decide to purchase the upgrade (from 4.0), had to install 4.0 then 6.0 then 6.0 updater. Everything worked. I, then installed ScanSoft PDF Converter.

    Acrobat Pro freezes with the splash screen.

    I uninstalled all of the Acrobat products and uninstalled ScanSoft PDF Converter. I, then, reinstalled Acrobat Pro 6.0 but had to call for a code to unlock the installation since 4.0 was no longer on the system.

    Acrobat Pro freezes at the same place.

    I installed the updater, reboot, and the same thing happens.

    Any suggestions?

    What does it say on the splash screen when it freezes? One part of the
    screen shows the last thing done.

    It doesn't scroll. The last line on the splash screen is the serial number.

    Nothing to the left of that at the time of the error? And did it stay
    blank until it failed?

    Also, hold down Shift as you start Acrobat. Does it (sort of) start?

    No, same behavior. It still hangs at the serial number.

    Ok, that eliminates all of the plug-ins as a cause. This is fairl
    unusual, I think. May be worth calling Adobe.

    Ah, here's a thought. Do you know where your TEMP folder is? If so,
    make sure you are set up to show hidden files, and see if there are
    tens of thousands of ACR*.TMP files.

    That was it! There were 65,539 Acr*.tmp files (I was converting an entire Outlook mailbox to individual PDF files).
