Default Acrobat 6 and CID font problem?

IWe have just had to compensate a client because a pdf they created with Corel draw which had subset cid fonts in it lost nearly all the fonts when we printed it in the our paper. We use Acrobat to create eps files for the rip and every time you save as eps it leaves the fonts out. Does anyone know of an issue with CID fonts and Acrobat 6, it is the first time I have encountered any issue, since A5.

    Dayle,

Why are you using eps files? What is your workflow? Why not rip direct
from Acrobat? Do you have Acrobat set to embed all fonts into the eps file?

We use eps because the ads are included on pages with edittorial material and the page output has always been postscript, editorial has no knowledge of pdf, all advertising workflow is pdf but the final rip is always from a eps file.

The issue is with old RIPs not completely understanding CID/Double byte
    fonts.

There are instances whereby you just CANNOT get around this ....

Speak to your RIP manufacturers about this ... or get the client to
generate postscript and Distill ... this can sometimes get around the
    problem ...

    Jon,
This is not a rip issue the eps is wrong, I have taken the eps A6
creates and distilled it the fonts are gone in the pdf.

I have seen similar issues. It doesn't seem to be systematic, or have
a simple description "oh yes, CID fonts don't work in EPS". I have
seen this with both TrueType and type 1 fonts, in slightly different
situations. I have had no luck at all with getting Adobe to
acknowledge, still less fix, the problem.

    Ah - now I understand ....

So to continue with Aandi's comments .. have you tried different EPS
save settings? Also, did this work with version 5 of Acrobat .. but not
    within version 6?

Mike does have a point since I smile when I hear my clients using
InDesign 2 or CS ... but look a bit grumpy when I hear they are using
Quark and thus the EPS route (though you might be using EPS for other
    reasons ...)

If after this we do find a bug then there is a product from STONE which
can convert embedded fonts into outlines ..

Tried all the settings in eps for A6, with the same result a stuffed pdf, also tested in A5 and the problem does not occur all the fonts are there in A5 version?

Using A5 is a fix but our workflow receives 1000's of ads I will have to go back to erroring these fonts on my Pitstop profiles, going back to A5 is out of the question I was the one who suggested the move to A6 because I thought Adobe had fixed any cid font issues. The test was done with the clients file and it was a Coreldraw exported pdf.

Well - we know the issues around the export to PDF versus
postscript/Distill (as De Siem brought up) don't we ;-)

I know you have no control over the PDF supply as such - but is there
any way to introduce some type of hybrid system whereby Adobe InDesign
is allowed to place PDFs and then re-output to full page PDFs ?

In other words, I am assuming you are using Quark to import EPS of the
double byte PDFs and the step to this (Acrobat 6) is where the files break.

InDesignCS (preferably) can deal with PDFs without issues ... so is this
any type of solution ? ... besides my suggestion about outlining all
fonts in a PDF from STONE?

    Jon,
We don't use any page layout program, the pages are constructed by a Cybergraphic opi inclusion ads are placed as patches and when the pages are assigned all the eps files are bought together using view file opi calls, then sent to the rip. I am not fond of outlining fonts with small type it seems to be not as crisp and clear as font data.

    dayle,

why are they providing you with pdf's rather than an eps. If they cannot
give you a decent eps file, tt would be best if they just gave you a
postscript file that you could distill.

The last thing I would want to do is go back to eps, with the number of files we process it would just hold up things considerably. We preflight everything so a pdf workflow is easier, the fact is that Acrobat 5 does not do this and 6 does maybe someone from Adobe can tell why I shouldn't start banning CID fonts in pdf's that are submitted to us.

Something else strange I made an element transparent and then did an eps and it worked all the cid fonts were turned in to outlines.

That's because there are options to convert elements to outlines to
avoid irregular stroke weights ... check out the options in the
'transparency' section of the EPS save ...

    Jon,
I knew that it would outline, it is something I have done before, what I found strange was that it could produce the outlines from the font data but if you save it as a normal eps it loses it or corrupts it some way. I appreciate all the feedback, though, but I still have a problem is this something that is probably never going to happen again or do I have to error these fonts to be on the safe side. I am seriously thinking of changing our preflight profiles to stop these fonts coming through.

I was using InDesign 2 and am now using InDesign CS, and I'm having similar problems getting pdfs to output. Type keeps getting mangled. I've been checking the pdf files (supplied by advertisers) and have yet to find a consistent pattern. Some are generated by Quark 6, but some are generated by distiller. Granted, we have an older imagesetter with postscript 2, but upgrading that is out of the question just now.
