Acrobat 6 unable to create pdf from postscript file

After reinstalling OS 10.4 (updated to 10.4.8) and CS1 on my G4, I discovered that I can no longer open Acrobat 6 and "Create pdf from a postscript file." I generate postscript files from Quark 6.5 and then create pdfs. Now I get an error message: "Unable to create pdf from:/Users/.... Using Adobe pdf settings: Standard see the log file for details. I assume the message wants me to look at the log in the Distiller dialog box, but the only thing I see is the opening dialog:

There is no explanation about what happened. It's as if Acrobat started up Distiller and then stopped communicating with it. If I try to create a pdf with Distiller at that point, nothing happens. However, if I quit Distiller and restart ot, I can create the pdf with no problem. I updated both Acrobat and Distiller to 6.02 (although the log still says 6.01). Do you have any idea what settings I need to change to prevent all this from happening? Thanks.

I don't know many people who use the CREATE PDF function with a
postscript file? Not saying it's wrong - only that (as you're aware) it
uses a different set of preferences (Preferences/Convert to PDF) ...

Have you tried re-starting Acrobat - then launching Distiller (choosing
your job setting) and dropping into the open Distiller window?
