Acrobat 6's Catalog Function is a Mess
There has been a substantial deterioration in the performance and usefulness of Acrobat 6's Catalog function compared to Acrobat 5. Cataloging 105 PDF files (60MB) using Acrobat 5 took about 10 minutes and resulted in index files totaling about 3MB. Doing the same thing in Acrobat 6 took over 30 minutes and resulted in index files totaling 1.5GB (yes, that is right, 1,500MB!!)
Trying to index 1,700 PDF files totaling 2.2GB took Acrobat 5 about an hour and resulted in index files of about 140MB. Trying to do the same in Acrobat 6 had me waiting for over 4 hours with no end in sight (indicator stuck at 92% completed) and the index file growing to over 38GB and it was still growing when I lost my patience and abandoned the whole thing.
I am using an AMD 2.6GHz PC with 512MB RAM and running Windows XP (SP1).
Would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has faced a similar problem or has found a solution. Thanks.

Re: Acrobat 6's Catalog Function is a Mess
First, Acrobat 6.0 is using a different indexing technology than Acrobat 5.0. This is why indexes aren't backwards compatible and also accounts for the difference in index size and performance.
What settings are you selecting when you generate your index? Specifically, are you specifying any stop words?

Re: Acrobat 6's Catalog Function is a Mess
Thanks for the response Nathan. Yes, I am using the stop words option to exclude words like "we, and, if, when, ..." -- about 30 words in all. I have also selected the option for Acrobat to ignore numbers.
I can live with new technology, but when the catalog file explodes from 3MB to 1.5GB between versions, I am inclined to think that perhaps Adobe needs to further finetune its catalog function in Acrobat 6.
Regards.
