Acrobat 7 - Unable to embed fonts?
Just wondering if it is possible to embed fonts in Acrobat 7 Professional? I am adding a docket number with the touchup text tool and under "Properties" it says I have permission to embed fonts. I click "Embed" and "Subset", but if I then Preflight the files, fonts are no longer embedded.
Any suggestions?

Re: Acrobat 7 - Unable to embed fonts?
I've just tried this myself with the same results. This is feeling
rather odd since I'm 99% sure it used to work with certain fonts at least?
I'm running 7.0.8 and cannot get any fonts to embed from the touch-up
text tool - works with Enfocus Pitstop's option though?
Also - not able to check at the moment (maybe one for Siem) but I'm sure
the encodings are more reliable with Windows?

Re: Acrobat 7 - Unable to embed fonts?
Hello
I'm getting a similar problem - if I make text edits with the touch up text tool, fonts in Acrobat 7 won't embed, yet if I open the same PDF in Acrobat 6 and make the same edits with the touch up text tool, it will embed the changes and allow me to save. All the fonts used in the PDF are installed on my machine and activated in Suitcase.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: Acrobat 7 - Unable to embed fonts?
Font embedding HAS been an issue since 7 was released. I posted a listing on this previously that ended up being quite long. I'll paste the link below:

Re: Acrobat 7 - Unable to embed fonts?
Still broken -- 7.0.8 and OS10.3.9, All Type1 & OpenType. Use TouchUp to even delete a space and it results in Fonts Not Embedded for that line of type. I relied on this (as it worked back in v5) to code various catalog pages for download. Now we may get a missing font dialog box.
Form fill will not give the error.

This is by design in Acrobat.

Re: Acrobat 7 - Unable to embed fonts?
Why is this by design?
If I own the fonts I use on my Computers. Why should it unembed the fonts. That's Stupid!
If I sent document to another person, that doesn't have the font I can see where this would happen. You don't want Another person, get the benefit of Fonts they don't own. The Majority of the fonts I own are Adobe anyway. The most of the others are from Microsoft Office, I haven't run into anyone that don't at leat own MS Word, or Office. And the fonts sets are supposed to be identical between all platforms. The only other fonts I own are some from Bitstream. And one customized version That is in my real writting.

Re: Acrobat 7 - Unable to embed fonts?
The reason that Acrobat unembeds the font when you touchup some text in a PDF is that it MUST do so in order to address two technical issues.
1) If the font is subset (or incorrectly embedded), then not enough information is known about the font and/or the glyphs may not be present for you to edit. So the existing font data is "tossed" and the data from your system is used. That's why the requirement that the font data be present. That also leads to...
2) Most/all embedded fonts do NOT include the necessary information for high quality text editing as that part of the font is removed during embedding since it isn't necessary for rendering ONLY editing. However, as noted above, we need it to give you a good editing experience.
All that said - the next question is "Why doesn't Acrobat RE-EMBED" my font after editing? The answer is that "We don't know when you are done ALL of you edits." We would then have to choose "too early" or "too late" or (as we currently do) "not at all".
However, the one remaining missing piece is that after you do all your editing, Acrobat does not offer a "ReEmbed All Fonts" option. We are aware of that limitation.

Re: Acrobat 7 - Unable to embed fonts?
I don't know about most people; but, If I do "any" editing at all its very minor. maybe a mispelled word often needing the deletion one or more characters or the insertion of such. . If I see the need for editing more than two or three items I go back to the original (except when I don't have an original) and do the diting and recreate the pdf.
So offering a re-embed command would be great!

You've seen these forums. I think most of us that know to edit the original file instead of the PDF are in the minority.

Re: Acrobat 7 - Unable to embed fonts?
I amy be in the minorty. but, I've pretty much known as long as I've used acrobat; that Acrobat's editting abilities are meant just for very minor details. :-)
Still the need for a Re-embed command would be great for when you need to do.

Re: Acrobat 7 - Unable to embed fonts?
The sad fact here is this USED to work with version 6 and 5. SO. Something changed that function and basically just makes a joke out of the "Text Edit Tool".
All most of us want out of the text edit tool is to just fix a small issue. Maybe a typo. Maybe adding a footnote number to act as a link target. This DID used to work before 7.
When this has been brought up previously (in several posts so far), the response by some of the folks that seem to be in the know at Adobe is first to assume the user is lacking the correct font on their system. Apparently by some of the most recent comments in this post there are other reasons that have been known. Why all the denial of the problem?
If one of the issues is "We don't know when you are done ALL of you edits" then why not make the program embed the small fixes upon hitting save?

Re: Acrobat 7 - Unable to embed fonts?
Refrying a PDF is NOT recommended because it is an EXTREMELY LOSSY operation. Please remove that concept from your braincells.
See <http://www.acrobatusers.com/blogs/leonardr/2006/10/06/why-refrying-a-pdf-is-evil/> for details.

Re: Acrobat 7 - Unable to embed fonts?
Tom, older versions of Acrobat also used to violate the rights of the font vendors...We don't do that anymore either.

Re: Acrobat 7 - Unable to embed fonts?
Again, too bad that MONTHS ago this statement wasn't made, rather than many responses acting like this is a new problem that must be an issue on the user's end.
I will recheck on a PC platform later as I have some time to see if the text edit tool works there. It did work, unlike the MAC when this issue was first brought up. If this does still work on a PC that will be interesting.
