Acrobat 8.0 Professional crashes after install on iMac

Default Acrobat 8.0 Professional crashes after install on iMac

I have now tried to install my brand new Acrobat 8.0 on my iMac, and it stays open for about two seconds, then I get a message that says "The application Acrobat quite unexpectedly Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details...."

I have OS X 10.4.8 on a 2.116 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please??? I've looked on the Adobe boards and the Apple boards, but can't seem to find any information. I have some work I need to get done ASAP, and can't do it until I get this resolved.

I've tried uninstalling 8.0, reinstalling, restarting, etc. Nothing seems to be working. I also uninstalled 7.0 before I installed this new one.

This new Acrobat was part of the package that includes Dreamweaver, but I haven't dared try to install that yet, lest it blow up on me too!

Any suggestions welcome!

Couple of suggestions Linda, your original post mentions that a report is offered after Acrobat quits, can you view the report and post it's contents? I believe the Acrobat crash log will we saved to this location: <bootdrive>\Users\<currentuser>\Library\Logs\Crash Reports\Acrobatcrasshlog. I would also suggest submitting this as a bug to Adobe here: <http://www.adobe.com/misc/bugreport.html> , you can post the crash report and console data here there too. Another thing you might try is moving the following directories to you desktop, and launching Acrobat again, <bootdrive>\Users\<currentuser>\Library\Applicatio n suport\Adobe\Updater5\ and <bootdrive>\Library\Application Support\Adobe\Updater5\ Thanks!

Problem fixed!

I logged in as root and deleted all preferences (in all Libraries) and user settings (~/Documents) that I could find pertaining to Adobe Acrobat; then reinstalled as root user. It then worked fine (except for the need to reassociate PDF documents with the new reader - using "get Info" and then rechoosing the Reader 8 using "other ..." not the one in the menu).

Thank you all for your suggestions.

Hi all.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I posted this, then had to get some work done, so I uninstalled 8 again, reinstalled my old version and focused on work for a few days. I've wasted so much time trying to get this application to work, it's just really discouraging.

I've taken off the old one again, repaired permissions, re-installed as "root" and all the other suggestions. Still blows out after a few seconds. I also submitted the report to Apple and Adobe. I'll post it here too. If anyone has any further suggestions (other than shipping this thing right back to Adobe, which is tempting), please let me know.

Thanks again!

Unfortunately I made the selection to use 8 as the pdf opener within Safari. It now crashes itself when used alone(avoidable by using my old 5.0) and Safari on PDF links---which I've been unable to undo. Should I/can I uninstall?
Unable to log in as root user. Utilities>Netinfo manager>Security. All 3 items under Security "unhighlighted". Assuming you can get me thru this phase and I repair permissions, do I need to "deleted all preferences (in all Libraries) and user settings (~/Documents) that I could find pertaining to Adobe Acrobat" or can I just "try launching Acrobat again"?

You shouldn't have to log in as root (as long as you have administrator privileges). I've had successful install of Acrobat 8 Pro on MacBook Pro and G5, both with 10.4.8.

I suggest a complete uninstall of all versions of Acrobat (using uninstaller that came with the version, or, if unavailable, according to manual uninstall instructions here on Adobe.com), followed by rebuilding hard drive directory with Disk Warrior, reset PRAM and repair permissions after rebooting normally. And if there are any system haxies, they should be disabled before performing this procedure and remain disabled until successful install of Acrobat 8.

Just a suggestion.

Bob,

Sorry to hear you're as frustrated as I was with Acrobat 8. Really a nice program once it's up and running.

After many installs, uninstalls, install holding my tongue to the left while tugging on my right ear, etc., etc., I finally got a temporary solution from Paul Herrin ( pherrin@adobe.com), just as I was about ready to chunk the program into the trash.

Mind you, this is a temporary workaround. You need to disable the automatic updater for Acrobat. It worked like a charm for me. I'll paste his instructions below. You don't want to leave the updater disabled for good, just until an update for 8 is issued. After all, often the updates contain security patches, etc., that you don't want to miss out on.

Here are his instructions. Hope it works for you too. You might contact him directly to make sure they haven't found a permanent solution, but from what I've seen, there aren't any updates for 8 available yet. He might want you to forward a crash report to him too.

Hi Ms. Stark,

I was able to locate your Acrobat bug report submission – thanks for sending it in. I am sorry to hear that you are having such problems with Acrobat, hopefully we can help.

We are currently investigating this problem (Acrobat/Reader crashes a few seconds after launching). We believe it has been narrowed down to a problem with are Updater process or conflict.

A temporary work around you can try is to disable the Updater plug-in and re-launch Acrobat. If you could try this and see if it stops the crash (and allows you to actually use the application and get some work done).

If you could try that, and let me know the results? To disable the Updater plug-in, browse to the \Applications\Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional\ directory. Select Adobe Acrobat Professional application, and Get Info (Apple + I). In the Info dialog, expand the Plug-in section, scroll down and uncheck Updater. Close the dialog and launch Acrobat.

I would like to know if this solves the problem, then if are willing, we can do some more detailed troubleshooting and investigation at your convenience.

Regards,

Paul

Bob,

Happy New Year to you too. Nice to start the year with all computer systems functioning, huh?

So glad that worked for you. And yes, I was amazed at how simple the workaround is too. That's after I spent about three weeks trying to fix the problem, uninstalling 8 and reinstalling 7 again to get work done, then uninstalling 7, reinstalling 8 to see if I could figure out what the problem was. Very frustrating. I'll be glad when they have an update that fixes it permanently. In the meantime, don't forget to check for updates and do contact Paul.

Have a great year!

I, too, am unable to use my recently installed Acrobat 8 Professional due to program crashes soon after launch. It started with the following error listed in the console:

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::runtime_error'
what(): Unable to determine registration filepath!

I was not given the opportunity to register the new version, and I'm guessing that is the initial problem. I uninstalled 8, then reinstalled. Same problem. Tried using the manual registration option under the help menu, it crashes again.

Not sure if this is the same problem as Linda has been having as listed in previous posts. Can you advise if i should use the same workaround?
Thanks.
