Acrobat 8 Professional not working with MS Word (running Leopard)
I've just bought Acrobat 8 Professional and every time I try to convert a word file I get this message:
"Acrobat could not open 'Letter template.doc' because it is either not a supported file type of because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
To create an Adobe PDF document, go to the source application. Then print the document to Adobe PDF or use the Acrobat toolbar found in Microsoft Office applications."
I've tried creating files that have only got text on so it definitely is not a decoding problem. As for their solution, it won't let me print it to Adobe PDF - I'm missing a drop down menu!
If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it, as I'm tearing my hair out with this damn thing!
Many thanks
Simon

Can you print to a physical printer?
Sounds more like a Word issue.

Re: Acrobat 8 Professional not working withMS Word (running Leopard)
You're doing File > Create PDF from file. This works with a text file that has open sourced code, but not with Word, a proprietary software package.
You will need use Adobe PDF Maker, or print to a pdf file using the Acro 8 virtual printer. When Acrobat is installed, a virtual printer shows up in the list of printers.

Re: Acrobat 8 Professional not working withMS Word (running Leopard)
You need to update to Acrobat 8.1 in order to successfully create PDFs from Office 2007. Without the update you have no PDFMaker buttons and cannot create a PDF from file. Go update.

Re: Acrobat 8 Professional not working withMS Word (running Leopard)
Thanks for the help - I've kept digging and it looks like I may also have a problem as I'm using Microsoft Office X for Mac, which from what I've read has a few glitches when it comes to Acrobat. There's an update but it's no longer available! I've now bought the 2004 upgrade so hopefully that will sort it. I heard Office 2008 for Mac was a bit of a nightmare?!

Re: Acrobat 8 Professional not working withMS Word (running Leopard)
Yep! no VBA Support there fore no Macro Support. Will be back in next version in 2010,12,14,16 or when ever the next version comes out. There was so many College and university people, presidents, Instructors, and students so riled over that That the people fielding the complaints had to wear ear miffs for a while, and had to get new glasses ;-)

Re: Acrobat 8 Professional not working withMS Word (running Leopard)
Word 2008 doesn't support the macros that created the toolbar. Instead, use the Adobe PDF printer installed by Acrobat which is faster than the Word plug-in anyway. You're missing nothing.

Yes the point being that PDFMaker doesn't work in Office 2008. Its useless. Its a VBA script that basically cause a hidden PS file to be created then that file is parsed by Distiller Then the PDF is created the the ps file is dumped. Now in Vers 2010,12, 14,16 (or whichever will be the new version) VBA will return and you could use PDFMaker again but not now.
(the reason for the many dates is with MS there schedule of when next version is out is a moving target and they now use years as part of the name. The last Office update took four years for Mac and PC. 3 years Mac(2001) . The first major update revisions to 2001 was I believe Office 4.2 which was Word 6/Excel 5. On PC 2003, 2002, 2002, 200, 98 and Office 4.2 PC) They say they try to stay on a two year plan. But doesn't always work out.

Re: Acrobat 8 Professional not working withMS Word (running Leopard)
I changed from office XP, windows XP and Acrobat 5.0 to leopard, office 2008 12.1.12 and Adobe 8.1.2. Now I am not able to have PDF files with table of contents and hyperlinks.
Is there really no way to do that with these new fancy office software products?

I do not know what type of documents you are creating. However, InDesign
is capable of making documents with links that will propagate to the pdf
file.

Re: Acrobat 8 Professional not working withMS Word (running Leopard)
Really the best output for PDF out of Microsoft Office 2008 files is to do a Save As... and choose the PDF format output. The graphics will come out hi-res and vector art (clip art) will not be rasterized.
Then take that into Acrobat and PDF Optimizer it to get it in any further better shape.
Also, just to let you know, Microsoft Office documents use RGB colors, so your documents are not really useable for printing press output. Fine for an office color copier, though.
