Default Acrobat 8 scan and save window too soo

Was using previous Acrobat and now Acrobat 8. Now when I create a file from the scanner I get the file save prompt window before I start the scan. I don't like that. I want the Acrobat 7 ability to scan into Acrobat and then if I like the results then I want to save, because sometimes I might make a couple scan tries to get the result I want.

I can't find any option to force the scan first and then I can save later.

    There is no option, sorry.

For a variety of reasons that UI was changed for the new scanning technology in Acrobat 8.

What is the new scanning technology? I read there is a scanner options dialog for the user interface, but I can't find that ability - I'm assuming it is only in the Windows version of Acrobat 8

    Scanner Options dialog box
    Data Transfer Method

Native Mode transfers in the default mode for your scanner. Memory Mode is automatically selected for scanning in resolutions over 600 dots per inch (dpi).

    User Interface

The Hide Scanner’s Native Interface option bypasses the windows and dialog boxes provided by the scanner manufacturer. Instead, scanning from Acrobat opens the Acrobat Scan dialog box.

    Paper Size

The menu lists available standard page sizes.

    Invert Black And White

This option creates positive images from black-and-white negatives, for example.

I agree with Keith about having to choose a file name prior to scanning. Prior versions created an Untitled document which could be viewed on screen while choosing a file name. But Version 8 requires us to create a file name prior to scanning, then either write it down or remember it (often with the document already face-down on the scanner) before scanning begins.

Another unfortunate change in Acrobat 8 is the interface for scanning additional pages. Prior versions allowed the user to simply hit Return to scan an additional page, or Escape to end scanning. The new interface requires user to reach for the mouse and choose a radio button for additional page, requiring more (and wasted) time and effort.

Newer versions are supposed to be more efficient, not less.

My latest frustation with this change is I just want to scan a page and email it, and now I'm forced to save it before I can scan. I don't like this forced change.

    Ken,
At first I was not sure about the additional page change, but in reality its ok for me, since most of the time I scan one page and not multiple pages.

I still don't understand why the changes were made in the first place. I can't think of how these two changes improve the user experience.

It would be interesting to hear the justification for the changes.

I like the new interface, but am getting a small amount of repeated page at the bottom of each page with Acroba that is not occuring with the HP scan software. It is a pain! Any ideas or is this a bug or incompatibility?

    Thanks

Steve, not sure what you mean by "repeated page". Can you describe what's happning in a bit more detail?

I small portion of the page (a horizontal strip) is placed in what would be the blank footer area. It originates from around the middle of the document.

    Thanks

    Hi, Steve

That's a puzzlement. Just some guesses, here...
Are you using a TWAIN driver for scanning?
What appears in the "Scanner" pulldown in the Acrobat scan dialog box?
Got the latest versions of scanner drivers?

    Happy New Year!

Problem solved. I bought a Fujitsu Scansnap S500m after playing with it at Macworld. It is compact and blazing fast.

It scans that document and has it appear in Acrobat. It has already named the file and put it into a folder - all based upon the software settings. What I'm able to do is to do a Save As and put the file where I want it to go. The folder where all the scans went into I made readily available, where I can select all and delete.

This scanner can do both sides of a page at once. I scanned 25 sides in a minute. Quality is really good. It has is able to feed in up to 50 pages at once.

As far as photos go, I can set it to its best quality, save files as jpg and have it drop them into iPhoto. Plus I also tried this out and it worked. I had a stack of photos and droped them into the top section where you put your documents, then pressed the scan button. Each photo became an individual photo imported into iPhoto and the stack of photos was keep in one film roll.
It was told at Macworld photos would scan at 600dpi. They seemed ok for my purposes and most of my scanning is documents, not photos so I'm ok.

So the summary is I bypass Acrobat Create PDF from Scanner and I can scan very quickly.
