    Default Acrobat Pro Extended

I've been wondering for several years about why the Extended version is NOT offered for the Mac platform.

    Does anyone know the reason?

    George,

Acrobat Extended is a new product. But it and its predecessor Acrobat 3D
has not been offered for the Mac platform for one and only one reason.
Adobe doesn't think it will generate enough revenue to justify the
    development cost.

If you are able to present the economic and marketing analysis to show
them the error of their ways, I am sure they would reconsider. Adobe is
in the software business to make money. I'm sure they wouldn't want to
leave a lot of money on the table. Acrobat Pro Extended isn't offered on
    any Unix platform.

    Thanks for the reply, Mike.

That makes perfect sense except I do question it. In my mind, 3D == Graphics; Mac == Graphics; most graphic designers I know use Macs and most of our customers use Macs.

There has to be another aspect to it that I don't know of.

Yes I was wondering about that as well. Most Software companies have this notion, That all Mac users use computers for is to doodle and have never been a serious Platform for getting serious work done. Yet you'll find the vast majority of Graphic artist use Mac because the handle Graphics so much better. Yet a feature that would be geared more toward Graphic artist, is not vailable for the Platform That best does Graphics arts . (always has, and always will).

The 3D in Acrobat 3D referred to its ability to embed 3D motion graphics from softwares such as Solidworks (Windows only solid modeling software) and AutoCad, Catia ProEngineer and the like. These are Windows-centric CAD applications not offered on the Mac.

Although Maya is ported to the Mac, my understanding is that it is not supported on Acrobat 3D, as well as many other CAD and solid modeling softwares available for the Mac. Many of us use Mac based modeling applications but, unfortunately, have to switch to Windows to use Acrobat Extended. Until products like AutoCad, Solidworks and the like are offered on the Mac, or Adobe supports Mac based CAD and solid modeling apps, this version of Acrobat will pretty much remain a Windows only product. And that is unfortunate.

    Paul, thanks for that explanation.

You are right, it is unfortunate. Maybe someday...

I can see Acrobat Extended being available for the Mac in the near future. It's a no brainer and it makes sense.
    Cheers!
