ActiveX - Mac Networking

Hi, I've read contradictory articles on the web as to wether ActiveX is supported on the Mac or not. What I really need to know, basically, is if Mac users can potentially install an ActiveX dialer from a website, by clicking yes on an ActiveX security certificate, on IE for Mac, or even Safari, Mozilla, Netscape, etc... I'm talking about those malicious type of dialers which call numbers with high fees, leaving the clueless user with crazy phone bills at the end of the month. Thanks for any input...

    Default ActiveX

    Hi,

I've read contradictory articles on the web as to wether ActiveX is

    Thanks for any input

The "classic" Mac version of Internet Explorer does support ActiveX,
although the Mac OS X version does not, IIRC. (Can't check it right
now -- I'm on my Mac via VNC, and the IE prefs dialog opens up on the
monitor I can't get to remotely!)

However, ActiveX controls for the PC won't run on the Mac. You would
have to develop a Mac-specific version of any control you wanted to
work with the Mac. As far as I know, no one ever developed a Mac
ActiveX control, for good or for ill. Therefore, your typical "click
here to install a giant wad of spyware" controls are not a threat.

Internet Explorer for Windows bundles some ActiveX controls, some of
    which are required for
normal operation. Also, Internet Explorer utilizes other ActiveX
    controls on the client machine,
i.e. win32 APIs. Hence, most other browsers implement psuedo ActiveX
    controls through plug-ins
or follow W3C standards to accomplish the same effects.

To date , no ActiveX plug-ins exist for Mac OS X. Although, IE for
    Mac does offer VERY LIMITED
support for ActiveX controls. However, if you visit
msdn.microsoft.com, you'll see that IE for Mac
DOES NOT support a majority of all ActiveX controls that exist on the
    Windows platform. So, to
answer your question, you won't be able install the ActiveX dialer.

No. ActiveX is NOT supported on the Mac. Avoid it.

Microsoft made a weak attempt to support it but it never worked.
