    You can only add comments to a PDF document with Adobe Reader if it has been enabled to do so **through using Adobe Document Server for Reader Extensions**.

    This is an Enterprise product from Adobe that allows you to apply 'rights' to the document so users of the free Reader have commenting/signing/saving abilities.

    You can find information about this here:

    Default Adding comments to Acrobat 5.0 pdfs using Acrobat Reader 6

    How do I configure the production of a document using Acrobat 5.0 so it can have review comments added to it when read using Acrobat Reader 6.0?

    The help information on these comment features in Acrobat Reader 6.0 stipulates that "... you can add comments only if the creator of the Adobe PDF document enabled commenting".

    Please advise how this is achieved.

    Thanks for the information about Acrobat 5.0.

    If I use Acrobat 6.0 to produce the PDF files can they be configured to accept comments using Acrobat Reader 6.0?

    The features list for Acrobat 6.0 seems to indicate this.

    Yes, but not with Acrobat.

    Jeff,

    you have fallen for the carfully worded text in the Adobe documentation, that I believe has been worded so that users THINK it says that you can make a pdf commentable by the Reader using ACROBAT, when in fact, they MEAN that you have to use Reader Server Extensions.

    Adobe want you to rush out and buy Acrobat 6.0 pro, then find that you still can't do what you wanted. You then phone them up, and they try to sell you something that costs the same as a medium sized house!

    Chaps,

    Thanks again for your comments.

    In answer to Aandi's question I fould it on the promotional information on the Adobe site.

    <http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatstd/indepth.html>

    This link takes to you to a page where there are several documents one of these being the overview document below.

    <http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatstd/pdfs/acrobatstd_overview.pdf>

    The wording and the features table on page 2 seems to indicate that it will allow commenting but it does not specifically say whether PDF's created with Acrobat 6.0 can be commented on using Reader 6.0.

    Is this what Ian was pointing out?

    I see the reference. Essentially, Acrobat Standard can do commenting.
    It can also forbid commenting. But it cannot allow commenting in
    software that would otherwise not do it. "You decide...whether
    users...can comment on...the file" can easily be interpreted that way,
    but that isn't what it means, sadly.

    To enable commenting in Reader, you need Adobe Document Server For
    Reader Extensions.
