    Default adding on a column...

How do I make a text box two columns?

When I use the create guides feature, the text does not reflow. ( typed in rows 1 and columns 2 )

    What am I missing?

That would indicate that you created a table. To add a column to a text
frame open the text frame properties dialog box and choose two columns
    from there.

Or...make one text box, then crop your text box up so that all the type doesn't fit in your text box and you get a little red X in the bottom of that text box frame. Then click on that red X, you will see little lines next to your cursor, and then click and drag to create another text box and the text will flow into that one. Then you can control the size and height of each text box and the text will reflow accordingly.

    Text Frame Options.

Or, you can click on the columns widget in the Control palette -- although that doesn't allow you to fine tune the gutter between columns.
