    Default Adding page numbering

I have used PageMaker 7 to create a number of lessons that I am now importing into Indesign. I have a trial version, runXP Pro - 768 mg RAM. I need to number the pages. For example first lesson is five pages. I have created a book with the first lesson in it. I click on pages to bring up Document Page Numbering Options (it doesn't matter whether I choose "Automatic Page Numbering" or "Start Page Numbering" option) I cannot get the page numbering to show in the document - any suggestions please. Also is there any way to move the Pages Palette or make the dialog box thinner and also to get the pages to show horizontally - at present they are vertical in one line - thanks.David

How did you do this in PageMaker?

I ask only because InDesign does it exactly the same way (although the shortcut for the autoPageNumber character is different.

Put an autoPageNumber character (see Type/Special Characters) on the master pages in a text frame.

You also need to visit the Pages Palette drop-down menu and choose Palette Options.

Grab the tab that holds its name and drag that.
