You can Control A in Excel to Select All, then just Control C to copy and in Illustrator document, Control V to paste. This will being in the spread sheet with all columns and rows as you see them in Excel. The only thing missing will be the cell grid lines. It will come in as editable text. Illustrator can't Place an XML file.
