Default Adobe 6 PDF Printer -- no file produced

    The machine: OS X.3, Acrobat 6.01, G4 867DP, 1G RAM

The workflow: Take a multi-page (64-84 pages) PDF document that's one size (10x12), and essentially "re-distill it" by opening it in Acrobat 6 and printing it to the Adobe 6 PDF printer using a new page setup and a set of Distiller Job Options.

The problem: The PDF processes through Acrobat 6 just fine, but when it reaches Adobe PDF Printer, the icon bounces once or twice, then goes away, as if it fails to launch. No new file is written.

Some history: When I started this workflow several months ago, everything worked flawlessly. The file would rip through Acrobat 6 in less than a minute, then PDF Printer would chew on it for about 5 minutes in total, and at the end I'd have a nicely cropped, smaller file sized PDF to pass on to another vendor.

Then, two weeks ago, PDF Printer stopped giving me the file upon completion. I searched around my HD, and nothing appeared. PDF Printer would spool through fine; but no payoff. I tried reinstalling the PDF Printer in Printer Setup, and nothing changed. I tried reinstalling Acrobat 6, and nothing changed.

Finally today I reinstalled OS X.3 from disk -- none of the recent updates -- and now Adobe PDF Printer does the "bounce, bounce, gone" bit in the dock; the file doesn't even spool through.

I was able to properly process the large PDF file into its smaller version on a machine running Acrobat 5 (Classic) with no hangups. I've done so with two different files, just to make sure there wasn't a corruption in one.

It worked before. It doesn't work now. I've gotten to the point where I can't think of any new angles from which to approach the problem.

    Any advice?

UPDATE: I have again upgraded to OS 10.3.4, based on research which showed that in earlier iterations of OS 10.3, Acrobat 6 would produce truncated PS files which couldn't be properly distilled. Adobe 6 PDF Printer is now processing the file... but I do not yet have the final, distilled PDF.

UPDATE 2: I am back at square one. The file processed but no new PDF was created. Near the end of the process, the "Adobe PDF" app (from Library/Application Support/Adobe) bounced a few times in the Dock, and then vanished. Seconds after that, the Adobe 6 PDF Printer window in Print Center shifted from showing how many bytes were processed to the cruel "No Files Printing."

Nice idea, but I already wiped the HD, and reinstalled OS 10.3.4 and Acrobat 6 from scratch. I've duplicated the same inability to print on another machine with similar specs.
