Default Adobe Acrobat compatability with Quicktime 7

Within our company, we embed .mov and .aif files into pdf files via Indesign and e-mail these files to our clients. Upon upgrading to Quicktime 7, we are now unable to play any of these embedded media files that utilise Quicktime within Adobe Acrobat 7.

    Here's the message I get:

""The media requires an additional player. Please click "Get Media player" to download the correct media player."" When I click on the "Get Media Player" button, I am launched to Apple's website to download the Quicktime 7 player. Of course, this does not help as I already have Quicktime 7 installed. I am having the same problem on different machines running Tiger and Panther.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems or know a workaround? Not sure who's problem this is - Adobe's or Apple's? I have left a post on Apple's site and other people are experiencing the same problem.

    Cheers,

    John

PS - Upon running the QT 7 de-installer that puts back QT 6.5, the media files play normally within Acrobat. So not a big problem for me - but how about our clients who have upgraded to QT 7!

    Johanz-

Thanks for the post. We too have bumped into this problem with playback of imbedded audio files in PDFs. It could be a real hassle to convince customers to step backwards with QT versions (or acrobat versions) to play sounds. Have you heard anything back from Apple? Any indication if Adobe plans to quickly release an update to acrobat 7 that might solve the problem. I tend to think it is an acrobat problem.

    Hi Ron -

Nothing yet from Apple. My feeling is that it has something to do with QT 7. I've been on the Apple forums and it would so appear that QT 7 is uncompatable with quite a few programs. Hopefully someone comes out with an updater addressing the problem quick!!

Do you know if the embedded files work under Arobat 6 running QT 7?

How did you manage to read the apple forums. They had a big crash over the weekend, and suspended all subscriptions. Eveidently they haven't turned it back on yet. I haven't received any subscription notices since saturday morning.

Acrobat shipped in December. QT 7 shipped, what, Friday? It isn't Acrobat. I installed QT 7 and have lost all functionality with anything QT related: iTunes, ProTools, Reason, QT itself, not to mention FireFox and Safari.

I downloaded from apple's website a QT 6.5.2 "Reinstaller" and used Pacifist to extract and reinstall the Qt plugin for internet plugins. That allowed quictime items on the Web to work again.

Perhaps you can use this. Hope no one threw away there 6 Pro Key.

    go to:

    <http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime652.html>

Note it only works with OSx.3.9

Thank you very much, pjonesCET! I won't be able to get to it until tonight, since, unfortunately, it was my home machine that received the QuickTime stomping. How could I have been so foolish?

Your Not being foolish, You have come to expect perfection out of Apple, not like the day to day screw ups of MicroSoft.

We've just found out they are human as well.

We'll just have to wait a few days or so until they can figure out what they did.

The installer. I mention above de-installs all QT 7 components (other than separate components you downloaded) and reinstalls all QT 6.5.2 components. Then if you still kept you Pro key codes re type them in you back to square one.

I think it bodes well for us users that the 6.5.2 installer removes the QT7 components. Hopefully the apps in question aren't so hosed that they can't be fixed with this.

    Thanks again.

I didn't know if you were using QuickTime 7 Pro, so I tried embedding a file - with the same results. (I did not use InDesign - I just created a simple PDF from a file, then used the Movie tool to try to insert a file.) Upon selecting the button to find the file, I got the same error.

This is actually the first problem I've run into with QT 7 (in its 3 day life span...lol).

Sorry, I need to correct my previous post.

When you try to add a movie directky from Acrobat 7 with QuickTime 7, the error is "There are no media handlers. Please install handlers before using this feature" when you click on the "Choose" button in the dialog box.

I have run the 6.5.2 QT re-installer on a machine running 10.3.9 and everything appears to be back to normal. Unfortunately for those who have upgraded, Tiger only works with QT 7.

I don't think it's Apple. I think it's Acrobat 7. As mentioned in the other thread on this subject, QT 7 movies DO play in Acrobat 6!! So the conflict is between Acrobat 7 and QuickTime 7.

On my Panther computer, I had installed QuickTime 7. I got the "There are no media handlers" message when I tried to play an embeddedd movie in Acrobat 7, but it played fine in Acrobat 6.

There needs to be an update for Acrobat 7.

My setup is different but for QT 7 and I can play an embedded .mov file
    in a PDF.

I'm still running Panther 10.3.9 and have upgraded to QT 7 Pro. I
haven't upgraded to InDesign CS2, I still have IDCS1 and am still using
    Acrobat Pro 6.

I create a default document in ID and place a .mov file in the document.
Under movie options I've set "Embed movie in PDF". I then export to PDF
using the Screen preset and change the compatibility to Acrobat 6 (as
    required for an embedded movie.)

I can open the PDF in Acrobat 6 and play the embedded movie without a
problem. The movie in question was using MPEG-4 video and audio.

I'll be getting Tiger before I get the upgrade to CS2 so I'll be able to
see if there is a Tiger compatibility problem.

That's what everyone is talking about Acrobat 7/Pro is broke with QT7. while Acro 6 seems to work fine.

I haven't needed as of yet to embed movies. In fact I don't know what benefit having a QT Movie in a PDF would be.

Sounds like Acrobat broke something in version 7.0/7.0.1 that worked fine in Acrobat 6.

    Philip,

I don't use QT movies, but I use Robohelp flash movies to demonstrate
how to use statistical software in my classroom lecture notes. I would
think, I could send out family newsletters with a QT movie of a child's
concert. I would thing a company report with an intro movie from the CEO
would be a neat applications. Application for attaching movies are
limited only by our imagination and the time to do it.

I create QT Movies and slide shows in Adobe Golive CS and have no
    problem playing them on
Tiger with QT 7 Pro. However once I try to embed the movies in
Indesign CS or Acrobat 7 Pro I get
the same results as everyone else. :-(
