Adobe Acrobat “Reduce File Size” no longerworks.
Acrobat Standard 7.0.8
Mac OS X 10.4.7
G5 PPC 1.6GHz
I choose the command and Acrobat “Freezes.” This happens whether I choose compatible with v6 or v7. The progress bar at the bottom of the program runs right through “Gathering data …,” but when it gets to “Processing images …” I get the SBBOD/watch for hours and must Force Quit.
The command used to work in version 6. The following messages were listed in Console after I Force Quit:
060816 16:34:26 Aborted connection 7 to db: 'organizer70' user: 'tomwinter' host: `localhost' (Got an error reading communication packets)
060816 16:34:26 Aborted connection 6 to db: 'unconnected' user: 'tomwinter' host: `localhost' (Got an error reading communication packets)
060816 16:34:26 Aborted connection 4 to db: 'unconnected' user: 'tomwinter' host: `localhost' (Got an error reading communication packets)
060816 16:34:26 Aborted connection 5 to db: 'unconnected' user: 'tomwinter' host: `localhost' (Got an error reading communication packets)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Re: Adobe Acrobat “Reduce File Size” nolonger works.
Charlotte,
What happens if you create a new user? Does it work in the new user?

Re: Adobe Acrobat “Reduce File Size” nolonger works.
Hi Mike. Thanks for taking the time to think about this.
I just spent an hour on the phone with Adobe. The tech guy I talked to was very helpful; basically, this is a bug they know about.
To work around it, one must:
a) be logged in as an admin user- regular user will not allow the Reduce File Size command to work
b) one must choose to save as Adobe 5.0 compatible, not v6 or 7 (when the Reduce File Size dialog asks for this option).
WIth these changes, the process works fine.

Re: Adobe Acrobat “Reduce File Size” nolonger works.
I recently started to receive a mysterious message when commanding "Reduce File Size" (7.0.8, OS 10.4). The Reduce process starts, but stops after I see "An error was encountered while processing images." This occurs after I export from a InDesign CS2 file that indicates "no problems" on PreFlight. I'm not sure that there really *is* a problem -- the PDF prints OK. Kind of weird.

Could this be a permission issue?

Re: Adobe Acrobat “Reduce File Size” nolonger works.
I noticed recently when running "Reduce File Size" that while it seems to work for me, the previews are getting corrupted (I started a new thread about this; my apologies). As far as I can tell, this only started happening after I upgraded from Panther to Tiger … although this may be a red herring for all I know. I'm using Acrobat 7.0.8, OS 10.4.8.

Use PDF Optimizer in the Advanced menu instead...
