Adobe Illustrator works OK, File takes forever to open - Adobe Illustrator Windows

Hi everyone, Just did some work yesterday in Illustrator ten for a CD Cover. The file is one page (118x240mm). I designed a small guitar, copied it, and pasted it in a grid pattern as a background. 15 guitars across by 7 rows (105 guitars). If I can ever get the file open again, I will be placing a text layer on top with song titles. Tried opening the file this morning. Actual program starts of fine, (locates all drivers, splash disappears, program interface opens with no problem). As it starts opening my file, I get a "Progress" box with ...

Default Adobe Illustrator works OK, File takes forever to open

    Hi everyone,

Just did some work yesterday in Illustrator ten for a CD Cover.

As it starts opening my file, I get a "Progress" box with the message "reading illustrator format". The bar is constantly moving, so the computer is NOT freezing up. All other appz work fine.

Just want to know how long does this progress bar appear? (I've already been waiting an hour). Is there another way of opening an Illustrator file, without going through this "Progress" thing first.

Does it actually have to open the guitar graphic 105 times? Is this what I'm waiting for?

    System Specs

    Memory - 640 Meg

    Op System - Win ME

    Processor - 1.7 Gig Pentium 4

    App Version - Illustrator 10

    File Format - CYMK

    Galaxy:

Does this happen with all files, or just the one? The crash or hang on start up litany is:

Delete your AIPrefs file (with Illustrator closed), see FAQ#2 in the forum FAQs at the top of the forum list.

    Then, try deleting adobefnt*.lst files

In any case, search for *.tmp files and delete them.

After trying the above, come back. steve

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the info. I've found the problem. When I closed the file yesterday, I forgot to expand the image, so yeah, it had to open all 105 individual graphics. This meant it had to open all the seperate bodies, strings, fenders and etc; something in the tune of over 500 separate pieces, (this took over three and a half hours).

Just expanded one guitar into one shape, redid the background grid and problem solved. File now opens in a flash.

Might be worth mentioning if other people are having problems, before touching any program files, make sure all the artwork has been expanded first, before saving and closing the file. (Menus>object>expand).

Thanks again for the advice, just wanted to make sure my art wasn't at fault first, before I started tinkering with the actual program files.
