Default Adobe Reader 8 connecting to webdav reviewPDF server, problem with

Adobe Reader 8 client stops responding when connecting to comments server. I have to Force Quit Adober Reader.

This is happening on more than one client. Review initiator's Acrobat Pro verifies validity of server.

typical client: dual G4 tower, OS X 10.4.8, latest install of Reader
server: dual G4 XServe, OS X 10.4.8 Server, stock Apache web server, webdav folder for comments

    Any suggestions?

I'm assuming that this is a Shared Review of sorts?? Can you connect to the WebDAV share with other WebDAV clients (i.e. Goliath)? If so then check the permissions on the share that you are attempting to go.

Yes, a Shared Review, not on-line or browser-based. Clients are to connect to the comments server from inside as well as from outside the network.

Finder and Goliath connect to and use the webdav share normally. In both Finder and Goliath windows, I can add, duplicate, and delete files as well as create and delete folders.

Within (and inclusively as to) the webdav folder, Unix file permissions are 640 and folder permissions are 750. Ownership for both files and folders is www:www.

Webserver realm permissions are too liberal. (I'm still working on getting Goliath to work with more restrictive permissions.) "Everyone" has read and write permissions.

In spite of what seem to me like promising settings, Adobe Reader behaves poorly. Right now I'm trying a regular AFP share for comments, just for comparison to the webdav share.

    Updating…

For comparison, I set up a Shared Review using a smb share for comments. I'm using stock Windows file sharing for OS X 10.4.8 Server on a dual G4 XServe.

I can access the shared folder normally through Finder. Add, delete, and duplicate both as to files and folders all work.

Permissions for the shared folder are very inclusive. Everything looks good.

Still, the clients (same as above) cannot participate in the review. When the "_Review" PDF is opened (directly from the invitation email), Adobe Reader gives the spinning pinwheel; and Force Quit shows Reader as "not responding".

The webdav server is local. I'm using the stock Apache server in OS X 10.4.8 Server, with webdav enabled.

Here is what, specifically, I have done in Server Admin to set up the webdav service. I've undertaken no manual configuration except to create the webdav folder and set its ownership and permissions as noted above.

Within Server Admin, under the "Computers and Services" head, I select the server in question and the service, "Web". Under "Web", I chose the tab "Settings".

Under "Settings" and with respect to choices under tabs other than "Sites",
    General -- did nothing
    MIME Types -- did nothing
    Weblogs -- did nothing
    Proxy -- did nothing
    Modules -- checked "dav_module"

Under tab "Sites" and subtab "General", I added a single web site with its root set at /Library/WebServer/Documents. Domain named thus: "server.company.com". All other settings under this subtab left at default.

Under subtab "Options", checked "Folder Listing" and "WebDAV".

Under subtab "Realms", created a single realm and in "Users" pane checked "Can Browse" and "Can Author" for all users (i.e., "Everyone").

Under the other subtabs, I left default settings. Then I saved and started service.

I've had very good experience using an iDisk for several reviews. It works very reliably as a WebDAV server. So it might have to do with your server configuration.

I'm open to trying iDisk for comparison. Indeed I have already tried Samba.

Samba failed though in just the same way as when I tried with a webdav share. Trying iDisk though might clear configurational problems.

I don't have an iDisk account. I guess I have to sign up for .Mac to do this.

With iDisk as host for comments I still had the problem. I chose the iDisk "Public" folder for comments if that matters.

I get this problem whether the client uses Adobe Reader 8 or Acrobat Professional 8 for reviewing. At the client, I open the invitation email; open the attached "_Review" PDF; get the "Connect" or "Cancel" dialog; click "connect"; and then every time experience the problem.

This problem seems to involve network users only. If logged in as a local user it doesn't occur.

I have proven this twice: once on an Intel Core Solo Mini 10.4.8 and again on a B&W G3 10.4.8 both using Acrobat Professional 8 as review client. If logged in as network user, application ceases to respond as described above; if logged in as local user, all works.

My network users don't otherwise give trouble. Users are managed with a light hand (e.g., all applications allowed) using Work Group Manager.

ad_agent - did you ever find a resolution to this problem? I'm running into the same thing now... network-home users only. It happens with the PDF plug-in as well.

Hi, I am trying to experiment with Acrobat shared review and having read through your posts on this forum it seems you are all quite far along this road while I am at the beginning wondering how to set up a WebDav folder. I really just want to run a test with a PDF to go through the steps of setting up the Shared Review function using a WebDav folder.
