Default Adobe=useless?

:frown;

My problem:
I can't install Flash Player 9 on Internet Explorer 7. I go to the appropriate
download page, it does its thing, and then tells me that version 7 was
installed successfully. No matter how many times I click on Flash 9, it still
installs version 7. I never had this problem with Macromedia....
How can I install FP9? Is there an alternative to Adobe?

My venting:
While the above is a mild frustration - I barely use MSIE since I prefer
Firefox, which installed FP9 without incident - the thing that set me off was
Adobe's support - or lack thereof.
After a few clicks on support-oriented links, I found I had to sign up. OK,
fine. After signing up and receiving confirmation, I tried to get support. Log
in and get a page that tells me, and I quote,
"Thank you for logging into the support portal with your new account. We are
now providing you access. Please try again in a few minutes."
I left it for 24 hours and still receive the same message. That's useless.
Try to report a bug? Go ahead ... but you have to choose a program from a list
and - surprise - Flash Player is not on the list!
Ooh, Forums - I'll try that! After a search resulted in no hits, I tried to
post a new topic. It asks me for a nickname. Fine. Click Submit and get
presented with the same screen, asking for a nickname. A couple more times and
I go back to the Forum and hit post new topic. Suddenly I can't access it at
all! I get a "not connected" error!
I wonder what happens if I try it on Firefox?
On Firefox I login and it hits me up for more information for my profile! By
this time I am good and annoyed, so my street name, city and zip code, for
Adobe's purposes, are laced with profanity.
Finally I get to this page, where I am actually able to type all this in. As I
think about it, I wonder if it will all disappear when I hit Post Message....

Hi

I'm so sorry you had this problem with the support portal. Can I contact you
offline? The problem you have experienced is not a common one, so I would like
to investigate the account information to see where it may have all gone wrong.

Thanks

I have nearly the same problem. The issue is that I go to a website that says I
need Flash Player 7. I click the link which brings me to the adobe site. I
download the install file for FlashPlayer. I run the install file which takes
about 1/2 second. On the adobe site it tells me that I have successfully
installed FP version 9.0. However, I still cannot see the web page. (this
happens on 3 separate sites so I know it is not the site).

P.S. I tried this in BOTH IE7 and Firefox. And yes, I have rebooted.

(I also had the same problem as the SaladGoat with the forum login.)

Wow! We must be twins, because my experience is very similar. I have recently
upgraded my internet to Window 7. Since then, my flash stopped working. The
websites keep telling me that I need Flash 8, which I had BEFORE I upgraded.
Now I can only find Flash 9. Well, I downloaded flash 9, got the little
message and flash that installation was complete, went to the website only to
find it not working. I have been through every support suggestion from
uninstalling with website, uninstalling with registry and restarting a million
times. Each time I get a message from abobe that flash is installed correctly,
then the website says I do not have flash installed. I have been at this for
three weeks now. My only other alternative is to buy a new computer or do
without (impossible since nearly all sites use active X and flash) HELP!!!!!!

I don't think its any worse than it was when it was Macromedia's support.
You've always had to sign up and pay for support with Flash, and I'd often
found that Macromedia preferr to write up excuses in technotes rather than
fix bugs.

It's too bad someone from the Flash Player support team wasn't viewing this thread so I could actually get some help installing the thing....

Reply to both DianaJ123 and iampirtle:
For me at least, when it says Installation complete and gives the little movie
thing at the top of the page, if I look down below that, there's a box on the
right that says Installation Complete, followed by Version 7,0,19,0 installed
successfully. Even though I clicked on Install Flash 9. I think this is
probably what's happening with you. Because it's an older version being
installed, it won't play the newer content we are trying to access.
There is more than one program to display pdfs (foxitsoftware.com is so much
faster than Acrobat), so now I'm looking for another program to show me
Flash....

> Because it's an older version being > installed,

You can only install Flash Player 9 from the Adobe web site like that .. It
does NOT install Flash Player 7.

The message after the install is saying you have Flash Player 7, that does
NOT mean Flash Player 7 was just installed then .. it most likely means you
already had Flash player 7 and the Flash Player 9 install failed, so you are
still left with Flash Player 7.

I suggest you completely uninstall Flash Player (using the uninstall utility
you can get from the adobe site) and then go back to the adobe web site and
reinstall.

I guess the point I was trying to make is that, when it was Macromedia, I
didn't need support. I don't care if a company's support group sucks, as
long as their products work as they should. But when they don't, they need to
have easily accessible support. I don't care if I have to sign up - is there a
website where you don't have to sign up anymore? The point is, once I
went through all that, I still got nothing for my troubles.

Here's a couple (hopefully) useful links:

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157

and, when that doesn't work, you can reinstall version 7 from here:

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14266

FP9 failed to install for me after uninstalling FP7 resulting in my having no
flash at all until I reinstalled FP7, intalled FP9 over the top of it, and
edited my registry to get it working. I had to figure all that out on my own
(nice topic title by the way).

Hi, I'm having the same problem.

Out of curiousity, could you please tell me how you edited your registry to
get around this problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm tearing my hair out with this!!

Here's how I edited my registry:

Find and replace all instances of Flash7.ocx with Flash9.ocx in the registry
(using regedit)
Find and replace all instances of 7,0,63,0 with 9,0,16,0
Add the following registry keys:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.8
(Default) Shockwave Flash Object
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.8\ CLSID
(Default) {D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.9
(Default) Shockwave Flash Object
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.9\ CLSID
(Default) {D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}

Change the following registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash\Cu rVer
(Default) ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.9

Thanks to everyone who responded, however, I still have my problems. I am not
sure if they are related to Java or not so I uninstalled Java but JavaScript is
still enabled. I'm back to IE6 and Mozilla (and liking Mozilla a lot!).

Here's a new twist:

I uninstalled FlashPlayer. Rebooted. Installed FP 9.

When I go to this website, it says that I have Flash Player 9 installed:
www.adobe.com/products/flash/about
When I go to this website, it says that FP is not installed:
www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome

Yes, even if I open a new browser, and with both IE6 and Mozilla.

Help?
