After installing new HP 1220Cse print driver...
After installing a new HP 1220C print driver both Illustrator 8 and 10 takes 10 or so minutes to print what once took a few seconds. MS Word and Photoshop 7 work print fine. It's just Illustrator apps. that are a problem.
I would appreciate any ideas.

You might want to see if there is an update for the drivers. And perhaps trashing AI's preferences might help as well.
