AI 10.0.3 .ai files not viewable in Reader 6 (Error 140)

Some - but not all, not even most - .ai files are not viewable in Adobe Reader 6 on Mac OS X (10.2.8) or Windows (2000 or XP Pro). Most .ai files display as PDF in Reader no problem, but for some reason a few don't. When opened in reader 6, some .ai files present this error message:

"There was an error opening this document. There was a problem reading this document (140)."

Here's an AI 10 .ai file that opens fine in Illustrator 10 or 11, but errors in Reader 6:

Any help? These often open just FINE in Reader 5, or when re-opened in Illustrator. Only a few files generate this error, including some that don't even have fonts embedded in them (what I though was the most likely culprit). It's new, and NO, we haven't installed anything new. It just started happening for no reason.

Brian,

When you saved the file originally, did you have PDF compatibility checked? Also, try clearing the Symbol, Style, Brush and Swatch palettes (in that order) of all unused swatches. I tried this before and you're right it does work fine in AcroReader5. Was it saved with Acro6 compatibility?
