AI 10 crash on open file

We recently upgraded our computers at work to Panther, but are still using AI 10. Now one of our computers is having a strange problem:
Every time we try to open a file through the 'file' menu in Illustrator, it crashes. Double clicking on the file itself, however, opens it just fine. We fixed file/disk permissions, threw out the preferences repeatedly, and took out all the fonts one by one, but none of these had any effect. We've also reinstalled illustrator and the system software on the machine to no avail.
Any advice would be appreciated.

We recently reinstalled Jaguar and then upgraded it back to Panther, but it's still crashing every time you use File>Open or command+O.
If anyone has experienced this before, any pointers would be appreciated.

So, this only happens on the one machine? And you've basically started from scratch with the same problems, huh? Have you run the 10.0.3 patch?

When you say you reinstalled the system software, are you saying you initialized the harddrive, or just saved over the previous versions? It's a more drastic fix, but reinitializing the harddrive, and then starting completely from scratch can sometimes take care of these kinds of problems. Weeds out any bug that may have remained after simply deleting the files.
