AI 10 no longers saves as "Illustrator document"

Somewhere in the middle of working today I lost the ability to save as an Illustrator document. I can save as an illustrator eps file but not an .ai file. Anyone have any ideas as to why this would be happening? I trashed all prefs and app support items for Illustrator, threw the program away and re-installed and still having the same problems.
I am running 10.3.3 on a Dual 1Ghz G4 with 1.5 GB ram, 2MB L3 Cache per processor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What happens when you try to save as ai?

I am not given the option in the pop-up menu. The Illustrator document option has disappeared.

Did someone install or activate something new to your system today? Maybe open a new font, even?

Nothing was added to the system today. However, I kept quiting the program and opening it back up and hoping for the best and that seemed to work. Go figure. I just hope the problem stays gone now.

Yes, I have noticed that also. And I can tell when it will happen. If I save a file and it takes an unusually long time, the next document I try to save will not give me the next option window to save down to AI9 or lower. That is saving as an .eps, by the way.

I can't pinpoint why it happens. I haven't had the problem since I updated to 10.03, but a co-worker just had that problem yesterday and she is already updated to 10.03.

But also I have been saving as an AI10 .eps instead of downsaving, so maybe it is that.

Anyway, if it does happen it's an easy fix. Just restart Illustrator and it goes away.

I would say that your System's preference folder is corrupt.

Good point did you check your scratch disk for corruption or is it filled.

I think my problem may have been caused by having the Illustrator CS demo version on my computer. I had the demo for about a week trying to decide if I wanted to upgrade. The two versions were getting along fine, then I started having the issue of not being able to chose "Illustrator Document" in the drop down window. I have since removed the demo version of CS and have had no problems with the issue recurring.

That is a known issue when CS is installed. Illustrator 10 offers a save as a TEXT FILE. That file format is really the .ai file.
