.ai file suddenly becomes .pdf

Been having this problem with some frequency, my illustrator doc will suddenly become a pdf. Seems after a crash or bomb, the default for append file extension is off, which allows files to change formats and format icons without changing the file extension. I am not saving as and not seeing the the change in format, this is strictly just hitting save and closing.

Anyone else experience this?

Yes, this happens to me too. I now always use save-as instead of save
because I am concerned it will turn to pdf. When it goes to pdf and I
get it back into Ai10 all guide lines are gone.
