    Default ai. vs pdf confusion

My illustrator 10 is not cooperating. After making a file going to file>save>format adobe illus and leaving all options clicked, i hit "ok". the file formats as an illus doc. i saved to the desktop. I then highlighted the new icon and went to file>get info. I read the new file was a PDF.
why is it not saving as an ai with an .ai after the file name?

thanks to anyone who can help in this snafoo.

    Known bug, upgrade to 10.0.3.

Also, saving the file with the .ai extension is said to help.

    John,
thank you, I thought i was going crazy.

do you mean that i should add the suffix .ai at the end of my file name and then hit "save"
I have 10.0.2. where do I get the 10.0.3? Download it from the adobe website?

Yes to adding the suffix. Though, I never had a need for it because I do not exhibit the problem.

Yes to downloading the update from Adobe.

Here is a link to the update. <http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=27&platform=Macintosh>

The update also fixes other inconveniences.

Are you running AI10.0.3? I think this was an issue fixed with the .0.3 update.

    Scott,

I just today installed 10.0.3. I have since created a test file and saved it as an .ai file. When I went to "get info" i see that it is still a pdf.. UGH !!

Am I missing something about how to "save" a doc.?

When you do a save as, did you add the .ai suffix to it?

Is it really a pdf (it opens back up with broken type, expanded effects) or does the operating system just think it is a pdf? (Using file open in Illustrator, the file opens with full editting capability)

If you do a search in this forum, you will hit other post who have the same problem. Besides running the repair permissions, delete prefs, I do not have anything more to offer on the subject.

I forgot to ad the .ai but the file opens fine. it just says PDF in the info box. I will look on the forum as you suggest.

at least i have the update and it is installed. One good thing.

    thanks so much.

In the info box, change the open with application to Illustrator.

Then, double click the file to ensure it opens to Illustrator correctly.

Also double click a real pdf to ensure that it opens to Acrobat correctly as well.

    Good luck,

    John

I might be wrong, but I recall learning that it only does this when saving in .ai format. If you save your files as .eps images supposedly they will not accidentally default to pdf files. It also helps to have the Append File Extension option turned on in your Files & Clipboard Preferences.

I haven't had this problem, so I can't confirm that this works. If so, let me know, 'cause I'm curious.

    John,
I did add .ai to the end of the file and it now says "illustrator" in the info pull down and opens fine.
I will also look into seeing if a true PDF opens in acrobat.

    To jonf,
funnyt thing about eps. I did save a file to eps and the person who has a PC could not open it. But the .ai file also made on a Mac he was able to open on his PC.

Johanna O. - Saving as an .eps

If you save it as a 8 bit tiff you shouldn't have a problem witha PC.

Dee means to save with an 8-bit tiff preview when saving as an eps, of course ;-)
