Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types > EPS
click Advanced to change the icon (they're stored in the Illustrator.exe
    file)
if you have a Restore button instead of Advanced click that to change back
to Advanced, change to the correct association and icon type

Where are the files located? On a server? If so, try moving them to the hard drive.

Illustrator is launched and the file is opened in Illustrator.

There is no command "File Types" under the "Tools" menu in WE.

When you go into Folder Options and scroll down to EPS, what shows under
"Details for 'EPS' extension" ? Is it a "Restore" or "Advanced" button?

There's nothing called "exe directive" or anything close.

Advanced button. I click on that, point to illustrator.exe, and select the EPS icon. That icon shows in the "Edit File Type" window, but I still only get generic icons in my directories and even in the Folder Options window.

Are there too many buttons on my mouse?

Hmmm, you seem to be doing everything right. Can I assume you've rebooted
the machine? Are EPS icons the only ones that are generic?

    Y'know, I can't be sure. I'll give it a go.

Are EPS icons the only ones that are generic?

Only ones I have a problem with. There are, of course, heaps of generic icons all over the place if I care to go excavating.
