AICS: select text on an unlocked path to insert some chars and lock cursor shows

This is very strange: The current layer selected in my document is one which is locked. Then I click on a text on a path item which is on an unlocked layer (amidst a file with 100 layers, most of which are locked)_ and the item gets highlighted as selected. OK, great -- so I click to insert some text into the middle of this path, and the regular cursor changes into the lock cursor (which means you can't insert anything). I check the layers palette, and the layer that the item is on is not highlighted. I try it several times with the same result. I'm being prevented from editing a type object because the layer selection is not changing to the target object.

My experience is that every other time in my life when I click on an object, the current layer selection is changed to the layer that the object is on. I'm shocked that it is possible for the selected layer not to change.

I have both object selection and type object selection by path only turned on.
