I'm trying to get my hands on an old PowerPC ThinkPad. As far as I've
read, these things are only able to run AIX up to 4.1.x. Possibly
4.2.x (no framebuffer support, etc). The problem is finding AIX 4.1.x
media is more difficult than finding a PPC ThinkPad machine! I've been
looking on eBay, no luck. I've never talked to IBM.. I don't think
I'll waste my time. That's where this post comes in. Since this is for
purely hobbyist/student, noncommercial purposes, I am hoping some kind
person will tell me about something free. If not, I am perfectly will
to pay a reasonable amount for a media set. (This are quite antiquated
mind you.) The only other option is resetting the root password on the
current installation. I don't know if this is possible (physical
access of course, but again no media). A third possibility, which is
has not been investigated would be to obtain a CD set which contains
the latest bootable CD from IBM that is relatively easy to get (AIX
4.3.x), boot off that and blow away the /etc/passwd (or whatever the
name is) password info for root or run some sort of rescue software on
the CD. This will allow me to bypass an install/overlay that will
result in a flakey system and still give me access to the machine.

Got anything? Hit me up.
