    Default Aligning object problem

I can't seem to make an object align left (or right, or top etc) with
another object in the way I want. I want to specify one object, and then
align it to another. Half the time though, it just aligns both objects to
the one with the edge that's the furthest left ( or right etc.) and if I
align to the centre, they BOTH move.

According to the help files, there's a way around this by click on the one I
want to align to before selecting the type of alignment, but it just doesn't
    work for me.

    What am I doing wrong?

Doesn't work for me, either. It just aligns according to the
    outermost edge as usual.

But let's say you have two objects on a page that you want left
aligned, but using the left edge of the object currently further
right. Just drag the other object to the right of the first object
before you do your alignment. It's an extra step, but a pretty small
    one.

Yes, that works well, but not for aligning to centre when both objects move.

I've found that first locking the object (CTRL+L) you want to align to works
    pretty well.
