Select the messages you want to show, and select "focus on selected
    messages" in the View menu.

And to put all the unread msgs in a bunch, click the column header for the
    unread status.

Let's say I did this once and a bunch of new messages arrive. Do I have
to "select" and "focus" AGAIN? What I am looking for is something like
this: Show Unread Messages. As long as this option is in effect, the
only messages that are displayed are unread ones. I don't have to do
anything else. Now, is this possible with what you are suggesting?
    Thanks.

IMHO, it's simply a good idea not to use your inbox to store messages
that you're done with. So, if you move messages elsewhere after
reading/dealing with them, then the only things in your inbox will be
messages not dealt with. Works for me. I personally tend to use my
"trash" folder as a history... and just avoid clearing it.
